Being a decent carpenter or plumber or hell, just being willing cut grass, automatically makes you a more valuable member of society than about 80% of college grads.
I mean there’s a fricking Union for coffee pourers and those nerds aren’t even worth minimum wage.

Is this a thread where everyone props up the top 5% of tradesmen as an example of why it makes no sense to go to college
Lotta truth. Put in 60hr weeks working for yourself and pull in maybe 140k/year. Never get to go on vacation because you are the business and have to watch knuckleheads. Always scared someone will take it all from you with one mistake.
Not saying it isn't noble or admirable, but there is a reason everyone isn't doing it. And it ain't pride.

Two reasons for that at least in LA:
1. The LAPELS board has a holier than thou approach with the whole interview process. I applied, showed the experience and in the interview they said my experience wasn't broad enough. Which was BS. They just didn't like it because I was going to be dual licensed. They want surveyors only. Multiple PEs have had this same experience.
2. The guys who charge pennies on the dollar because they do it on the side from their City or State jobs. Surveyors need to get together like attorneys and doctors and say the floor is $200/hr and everyone do it.

is not just the kids that aren't interested. The programs that would promote such interest are seen as unworthy.
Another reason to stop letting women run primary and secondary education in this country. I mean being a teacher is probably one of the least skilled professions in the country but they think they’re special because they got their MRS degree in how to teach kids to fricking color. We need more men teaching in our schools. I’d go so far as to take money out of women’s salary and use it to pay men more.

Unions here are begging for apprentices.
Younger folks aren't interested in work.

Unless you’re a REALLY strong math and/or science student interested in a STEM career, I would advise against traditional university altogether.
So u dont think medical is worth it,lol

Medical falls under science in STEM I would think.

Medicine tends to fall under the “S” in the STEM umbrella

but for a lot of these unions you're fighting time, hoops, and nepotism.
You could have just led with, "The unions fark it up."
I didn't understand that the point wasn't to be an electrician and sweat all day in an attic, the point is to own a fleet of trucks of other people sweating in attics (or plumbing, etc.) Now it's too late for me to switch. I totally would, because wiring is a solvable problem, while a lot of crap I deal with now is just people not listening.

My own doctor says that if he were a young man, he wouldn’t choose medicine now.

It requires work and not playing video games all day

Medical is so broad that I can’t really address that. Training for many jobs in the medical field is not much different from trade school.

As he goes home to his nice house and big bank account every day.

I spent a summer in Mississippi working as an electrician helper when they were installing the high bay lights on I55 thru Jxn. Ten hrs a day in the sun with nowhere to hide. You bet your arse I made my grades and made damn sure I had a job in the AC after that.

They are coming across the border very day, baw.
Unskilled labor always costs more in the long run, after they screw it up and you have to hire someone with skills to fix it. Illegals are coming for the welfare, not to work.
If unskilled labor were the key to economic success, Mexico would be a richer than the US.

Medicine is another field being overtaken by white women.

One of my baws is a diesel mechanic and makes 120k a year. Was like a 1 year program he did to get there
Now you have to be willing to work in a greasy hot garage but thats a 6 figure job with minimal investment

I used to sort of make fun of the heavy diesel mechanic MOS (88M) in the Army, but those peeps can go *anywhere* in the world, and have a decent paying job in hours.
