I wasn't sure whether to put this on TV board or poli board so I'll put it here and let the mods sort it out.

This is a 1 hour 15 minute documentary put out by PBS that explores the plight and blight of Youngstown OH, Memphis TN, and Stockton CA and comes to the conclusion that it's a breakdown of nuclear families and churches, and that billions of dollars thrown at the War on Poverty going back to LBJ have done nothing, it has only gotten worse.

I can't believe PBS put this out.

It's a very honest and eye opening documentary.

Blue Zones across the world have proven this. Family, laughter and natural exercise lead to longer, healthier, happier, and productive lives . Welfare shifted focus away from family and is objectively responsible for destruction of the lives of those it pretends to help. It took away the focus on family and independence. No place is this more evident than cities.

Thanks for the rec. Made it through Youngstown and Memphis. Interesting but definitely sad. I got no answers. The lack of nuclear families is clear (and a huge problem) but don’t know if that’s a chicken or egg issue.

I’m almost through Memphis. Thanks for the rec, OP. It’s very sad and some of these folks seem like honestly good people. The Memphis mother with the two girls tugged at my heart.

I have a big client out in Stockton and never would have known this was their world before this show. Wow.

It's enough to make one wonder if LBJ's "great society " really isn't that great

it's really this simple. I would add in faith in a higher power to provide moral purpose.

Faith was a big factor in the Blue Zone documentary on Netflix (Live to 100).

I’m sure GTHOM just forgot to mention it, but faith plays a prominent role.

ETA that “life purpose” (called different things in different cultures) was also a big factor.

Frontline has some very good documentaries. If you are marginally educated, you can sort through the spin from some of those interviewed.

There's a reason cities have gone to shite, but society as a whole hasn't wanted to admit it for 60 years. Why start now?

Not to poliboard it up but Tim Scott went hard on LBJ and the great society in the RNC debate the other night for this and it kinda gave me a chub.

As the government mandated distribution system expanded, the need for family and community bonds declined.

You used to have to have a stake in the society you lived and you had to form bonds with others in your community to be granted help/aid or you lost out.

Now you get it for simply existing. Fill out a form and money will be sent to you without any further questions.

Society also had a stake in making sure women were married and children were raised in families, now the state has removed the societal incentive to do that and unmarried women with children are community disasters and their children grow up to pass down that dysfunction to the next generation of children born to unmarried mothers.

People don't have any stake in each other's lives.

We all know what these cities have in common, too. That's the 800 lb. gorilla in the room that the media refuses to talk about/address.

im a firm believer that the biggest solution to poverty is quality education, instead of sending billions to ukraine we should be putting money towards better teaching and educational facilities

The war on poverty was really about creating the welfare state. There is a LBJ quote most are familiar with that supports his efforts. I will not quote it because I dont want to be banned.

What needed to happen was dire consequences for men who do not support their children. Many children do not even know who their father is.

And an insistence on working and remaining in their children's lives would have been the correct path. Also punishing people who didnt work to make their children do well in school.

In other words, literally every policy pushed by Democrats for the past 70 years has lead to the destruction of American society. This leads to an important question….

Are Democrats just stupid and don’t realize the policies they support are destroying our society?

Or

Are Democrats not stupid and know the policies they support are destroying our society?

I contend it’s the later. They, at least those in charge, know they’re destroying society and are doing so because they know the only way to turn America into a Marxist totalitarian state is to first destroy society as it’s been since the founding of the country.
