Amazon says it's launching online vehicle sales in 2024

Amazon to launch online auto sales — starting with Hyundai
I don't see how this won't phase out local dealerships over time. There will be local distribution and warranty centers but those will be manufacturer-owned. The days of local dealerships seem numbered especially if Tesla continues to win lawsuits like the one they filed in Louisiana.

Consumers will soon be able to buy cars on Amazon.
Starting in 2024, auto dealers for the first time will be able to sell vehicles on Amazon’s U.S. online store. Hyundai will be the first brand available for customers to purchase, with more brands to follow. (In 2024, Hyundai naming Amazon Web Services as its preferred cloud provider, and the Alexa Built-in car-based digital experience coming to Hyundai’s next-generation vehicles.)
Under Amazon's partnership with Hyundai, customers will be able to purchase a new car online, and then pick it up or have it delivered by their local dealership. Customers will be able to search on Amazon for available vehicles in their area based on a range of preferences, including model, trim, color, and other features. After choosing a car, customers can check out on Amazon using their preferred payment and financing method.
The partnership follows Amazon’s January 2022 agreement to deploy its technology and solutions, including Amazon Devices, Amazon Web Services (AWS), and Amazon Last Mile, across the organization and vehicles of Italy-based automotive conglomerate Stellantis (parent of U.S. auto brands including Chrysler, Dodge, and Jeep).
“Hyundai is a very innovative company that shares Amazon’s passion for trying to make customers’ lives better and easier every day,” said Amazon CEO Andy Jassy. “Our broad, strategic partnership should do just that, from changing the ease with which customers can buy vehicles online, to making it simple to use Alexa in Hyundai vehicles for entertainment, shopping, smart home adjustments, and calendar checks, to enabling Hyundai to transform their customer experiences and business operations by moving to AWS. We look forward to inventing together for many years.”

What are small-town frat boys going to do when they can't hit the sorostitutes with the "my dad owns a dealership" line?
Posted on 11/17/23 at 7:36 am to Obtuse1
Hopefully this drives the prices down at the local stealerships

It's ridiculous that there are laws stopping direct-to-consumer sales of vehicles.
Elon is going to break up that lobby group that has kept that law on the books, though.
It sucks there will be fewer local jobs but the dealerships have only themselves to blame for crap like jacking trucks up $30K above sticker in some instances during the recent shortage just because they could.

Fewer lying salesmen? The horror.

That's going to be a big box on your front porch.

Fewer dealerships means fewer support jobs too.
I bet a state like LA will maybe see a distribution and service center in any bigger city. All of the small-town dealerships will be gone including their body shops and service centers.

Non-dealer body and mechanic shops still exist.

Pretty sure from what I have read that you will still ultimately be buying from the local dealerships.

Of course. My point is there will be fewer in small towns is all.
No matter how you slice it no dealerships means fewer support jobs. Not just fewer salesman

Yes my OP points that out but Tesla has sued Louisiana to be able to have direct-to-consumer sales. They are trying to phase out dealerships.

Over time, the dealership model will probably cease to exist.
I think Ford would phase out dealerships if they could. They seem to hate dealerships.

That’s correct. This story was on my local news earlier this morning. You buy it on Amazon but then go to your local dealership to pick it up and service it from that point on. Really, Amazon is more like a middleman in the whole process from what I gather.

Would love to see it happen. Make purchase online, show up to sign paperwork and take delivery.

I just want to be able to buy a Hilux.

Can I still get 30 day returns?
Posted on 11/17/23 at 8:04 am to Esquire
And extended holiday returns
We started selling on Amazon this year as well as Walmart.com and people absolutely abuse Amazon returns. Just yesterday one guy (I looked him up and he is a Dr) tried the package never received scam despite Amazon having photos of it on his front porch. I loathe people.

How long before all you can find on Amazon are cheap Chinese knock offs?

Not necessarily. The amount of cars needing repaired shouldn't change which means the need for technicians shouldn't change.
If dealerships close(leading to a loss of employment for mechanics), then demand for techs and mechanics at local mechanic shops will rise. This should also lead to an increase in demand of shops as the existing one's will start seeing backups.
