Good for BR and EBR Parish.
Lots of construction jobs, should be a lot of quality permanent jobs,

This should spark growth in that area.

construct an automated distribution and fulfillment center

so not many long term jobs?
The 650,000 sq. ft. distribution center Amazon is building in West Deptford, New Jersey will employ 1,000 workers.

I have no idea if the planned 1,000,000 sq. ft. distribution center at Cortana will employ that many or even more.

Not being from BR, is the mall location that great of a location for a distribution center? I am trying to understand why Amazon would purchase the mall properties and the individual stores and then tear it down just to build a new facility?

Quick access to two interstates, an airport, it's less than ten miles from a deep water port and a large rail interchange, and it's literally at the intersection of two major U.S. Highways with already existing truck access to both of those highways because it was a mall. They might have to upgrade some of the immediate infrastructure for their needs, but it's basically an ideal location for a distribution center.

Baton Rouge traffic negates like half of that, though.

I'm assuming state has promised road improvements in the area. But i agree, with a little touch up of the infrastructure the site is ideal for this type of facility. And there's plenty of good jobs associated with those centers. Hope it comes to fruition.

There's really nowhere else in BR I can think of to put a facility of this size that's better suited to handle the trucks/delivery vans. There just aren't that many big areas of land available with half decent roads that already exist.

Once finalized, Amazon is expected to tear down the nearly one-million-square-foot mall property, which was built in 1977, and construct an automated distribution and fulfillment center of more than one million square feet.

The deal would be a major economic development win for Baton Rouge, creating jobs and returning a large vacant property in north Baton Rouge to commerce.

A very positive sign: They are keeping it close to the vest - as best as they can. It's a BIG deal with a lot of moving parts. The fact that the State, Amazon, and EBR are not running their mouths has certainly got my attention.

West Deptford is an advanced robotics building. I assume BR would get the same. Staffing models for these buildings are also the same so you can assume the same amount of employees. Staff balloons to 2k during the holidays. I will say I've never seen one of these buildings developed on a site like this.

I'd be willing to bet that we are helping fund the building purchase and demolition costs. Even if we are it would still be a net positive. Cortana is kind of an eyesore now.

If that Dilliards clearance center gets leveled it will be a huge net negative on the economic impact of my family. They damn near give clothes away in that place.

It really isn't. Florida should be the area Gravy et al should be focused on most. That is an excellent area to begin the NBR fix. Build off of successes of Government Street and Old Goodwood. Build off of this Amazon facility.

Instead they want to do the impossible.

I haven't been in there in years. I used to work down the street and go occasionally.
