The labor market is already tight in BR. Now Amazon is going to push the $15/hour narrative and frick the whole market up.
Are you afraid that they will start doing some politicking around here? I doubt that. If you're worried that they'll just, you know, pay their employees decently, that's a weird thing to worry about.

Not really. If they build a mostly automated warehouse, there will only be a handful of actual jobs available. Those jobs will go to people with some actual qualifications, not your normal Popeyes employee.

Dude, “mostly automated” shipping centers still require huge numbers of employees.

I would not be surprised if the total number of new Amazon jobs, not to mention other employment by support and ancillary companies, would be in the upper hundreds.

Add in the janitorial companies, electrical/maintenance workers, construction jobs, etc, and it’s easily over 1,000 jobs. That’s pretty big for Baton Rouge.

They better dig a moat and put in some gun turrets first. Ed 309s wouldn’t hurt either.

My point was more the person concerned about the $15/hr and how it could affect the BR labor market. Many of the jobs you just listed, they would not take the job for $15/hr. It's not like the fry cook or cashier at popeyes would be the same employee potentially picked away by Amazon.

nce finalized, Amazon is expected to tear down the nearly one-million-square-foot mall property, which was built in 1977, and construct an automated distribution and fulfillment center of more than one million square feet.

This is disgusting. I cut my teeth working at the local Walmart that my daddy worked at and his daddy before him. Last Christmas he was laid off as the greeter and my hours were cut due to amazon killing our business.

It’s disgusting y’all support big corporations taking jobs away

Most of the Amazon employees that I see definitely aren't Popeyes worker types. They seem to have some hiring standards at least.

Don't forget, when I am forced to go to Walmart because I forgot something, I use the self-checkout too.

Lol, there’s going to be so many packages that get “lost” in shipping.

I was wondering why there are tons of Amazon jobs commercials on TV lately.
I guess this solves that mystery.

This will probably be what Amazon calls an Advanced Robotics site. They are usually around 1MM square feet. The “robotics” are electric drives that move big pods of goods around. This type of site only distributes goods that are about a shoebox size or smaller to allow the items to fit on the pods. Would employ over 2k during peak times. Good deal for BR if it happens.

That can't be true. All I read on the O-T and Poli Board is how much the Baton Rouge labor market sucks.

Dept of Labor for September shows unemployment rate at 4.2% and 17,000 people unemployed.

A lot of full-time, long term, high paying jobs. The site will employ a whole bunch of operations, finance, HR, etc.. All are paid better than your average BR job and require a college degree. Would also have around 100 maintenance folks who work on the material handling equipment and robotics. Lowest pay for a maintenance tech is over $20 an hour with full benefits. No college degree required. Top maintenance guy earns over $150k.

Not being from BR, is the mall location that great of a location for a distribution center? I am trying to understand why Amazon would purchase the mall properties and the individual stores and then tear it down just to build a new facility?

Seems that it would be better/cheaper/quicker to purchase empty property and then build there.

Unless there is some nice incentives to go the route they are going...

It's very centrally located. It sits at the intersection of two major highways and fairly close to the interstate.
