The first Amazon Go grocery and convenience store will open to the public Monday in Seattle — letting any person with an Amazon account, the Amazon Go app and a willingness to give up more of their personal privacy than usual simply grab anything they want and walk out, without going through a checkout line.

...After shoppers check in by scanning their unique QR code, overhead cameras work with weight sensors in the shelves to precisely track which items they pick up and take with them.

When they leave, they just leave. Amazon Go’s systems automatically debit their accounts for the items they take, sending the receipt to the app.

In my first test of Amazon Go this past week, my elapsed time in the store was exactly 23 seconds — from scanning the QR code at the entrance to exiting with my chosen item. Most of that time was spent choosing my preferred flavor of Odwalla juice.

Cool technology, I'm curious to see if this scales up to a big grocery store, this is closer to convenience store size at 1800 sf.

The author makes a bit of a fuss over privacy concerns. I suppose it's a fair question to ask, but does anyone really care that a computer camera system is tracking everything you do in their store? Many stores already have security cameras on every aisle for security reasons and companies like Google and Facebook already know everything you purchase because our credit card companies sell that data to them.

Amazon Prime Now in Nashville has ruined me haha. Being able to order what i need from the grocery/Walgreens and having it delivered to my house 2hrs later is awesome.

What happens when you pick up something that you set down somewhere else when you decide you don’t want it?

News like this reinforces my problem with trump not talking about re-educating the workforce for this tech boom but rather talking about coal and illegals. this was always the inevitable, and jobs will still be created. it's just going to leave an older segment of the workforce behind

you are already on camera in EVERY store you go into.

Im wondering is soon you will have to "scan" your ID to get in. With the bums just walking in and walking out with stuff.

I imagine these cameras are slightly nicer than your average grocery store though. Checking the cameras at the store I worked out was almost a waste of time.

I agree the only problem is if you run into a group of folks who don't know how to work a computer to save their lives and backs up the whole fricking thing.

If you look at the picture I posted, it's a little hard to see but there is a clear plexiglass gate that opens after you scan your phone. So that keeps people without the Amazon Go app out. They also said there's an employee at the door kind of like how Sam's does because IDs need to be checked as you leave for alcohol purchases.

Hopefully they charge you for being a lazy SOB who didn't put it back where it belongs.

After all, it's only 1800 sq ft.

ETA - I see this comment has been eloquently made a few times already. It still stands though.

Concerning yourself with this seems a bit unreasonable. I can't think of a situation where this has ever happened.

Can't wait until they roll this technology out at all of their Whole Foods stores.

That's why I wonder how well it will scale. Will it be able to tell the difference between me grabbing a sample on top of the bakery counter and me grabbing the cake they put on top of the counter? A full grocery store will present a lot more complications and you're a lot more likely to have people put things back in the wrong place.

Amazon needs to put a store in the airports, where I can look up things I forvot on my travels, and have then waiting at the Amazon store where my connection is.
