In Ohio, but that's not important right now.

I thought that there were filings with the state last month for some major development there?

With Ohio State anchoring over 60,000 highly educated students for a potential workforce.

The schools in metro Atlanta that I listed have over 150,000 students.

I laughed much harder at this than I probably should have.

There was. Looks like that they’ll be able to grease the skids and get it ready to go for construction if Atlanta is selected.

Columbus ranks 5th in the country to Fortune 500 companies

I'd like to see some proof of this.

Just off the top of my head, I would think New York, Atlanta, Chicago, San Francisco, Dallas, and Houston would all have a lot more than Columbus.

Add DC area to that list and I think that's the finalists.

Chicago and Pittsburgh probably have an outside shot as well.

Each has its drawbacks:

Chicago - state and local government, tax environment
Pittsburgh - not a huge metro area with a major int'l airport
Dallas - might be a tad difficult to attract top tier tech talent to Dallas, public trans isn't as good as some of the other options, not a ton of top tier schools nearby compared to peers
Atlanta - traffic
DC - cost of living, traffic
Boston - cost of living, space, Logan isn't quite the hub that Hartsfield, DFW, O'Hare, etc. are

It'll be what Amazon can live with.

Nah, most likely Loudoun County which is already home to 70% of the worlds Internet traffic.

Am I the only one that doesn't totally get the "educated work force" criteria? Or rather, I don't see why they should put a huge emphasis on it?

You're frickin Amazon. You could hire anyone in the world from any city or University and move them to whatever HQ you want. You want MIT kids doing unpaid internships? Ok, set something up with MIT, make the kids pay their own way to get there...it's not like they will say "no thanks, that's a little too far for me to come work with you and add that to my resume."

Amazon can "create" an educated work force wherever they decide to open up. UW has a fantastic medical school but its not some world renowned University.

Amazon's work force is amazingly good, but they do sometimes lose people to Google or Facebook or starts ups and the like for top tier tech talent and to consulting or investment banking for top tier business strategy talent because of location. I saw it a bit when I was doing recruiting out of grad school - people in the prime of their careers want to be a little closer to family and friends than Seattle.

I've also lived out there, and while it's a great place to live, being so far from family and friends is a big drawback. It's one of the primary reasons I moved.

The most educated work forces, and most big tech as a result, are in the liberal cities (San Fran, Austin, Seattle, Boston, Denver/Boulder). There is no amount of money you could pay me to live and work somewhere like Atlanta or Dallas, and I guarantee the HQ won't end up there

In the same vein, I guarantee Denver isn't getting it. Amazon will not have two western HQs. Not happening.

Atlanta and Dallas are both plenty big and plenty diverse enough to draw what Amazon wants to draw.

Don't underestimate the real estate needs for something this big. I've got a good friend who works in corporate real estate here in the city (his company sells entire skyscrapers) and the plans being put forth to lure Amazon are absolutely enormous. And of course how willing the city and state is to play ball will be a huge factor. All things that cannot be known when arguing things like airport and universities.

(And while I'm sure a large airport is important, this is a corporate office, not a shipping center...so cargo is likely irrelevant)

Atlanta has a much more diverse educated workforce than those cities. Does any city have a better educated AA workforce than Atlanta?

I guarantee that’s a factor for Amazon.

Atlanta is a real contender.

First, what defines the “Atlanta Region”.

Second, how high quality are these 57 colleges and universities? How many are community colleges?

I’m actually genuinely curious.

You're right that cargo doesn't mean shite, but they will need a large int'l airport for doing business. That's a big draw for Chicago, Atlanta, DC, and Dallas, and Boston isn't too bad there, either.

The Chicago site I've seen that made the most sense was the site in West Lincoln Park along the river. I've also seen the Tribune site proposed as well.

The Lincoln Park site would be an awesome location for them, but damn, rent in LP and Bucktown would be through the roof.
