We are meeting a friend for dinner for her birthday in 2 hours. Step daughter gets home from school and heads to the pantry. I said “don’t eat…we’re going to dinner soon”. Wife is mad and tells me “you don’t tell a teenage girl anything about eating. It’s ok if she has a snack.”

But I know if she eats now she will order dinner and not eat it and I’m sick of buying meals and wasting them (and my money).

Was I wrong?

How are we supposed to judge without first seeing pictures of your wife?

But seriously, as the person who usually pays for all the meals, you're going to need to figure out how to deal with other people wasting food that you are paying for, especially after you have grand kids.

Whatever is not eaten, just have it boxed up and take it home. Eat it for breakfast and lunch for however many days it takes to finish it. Leftovers are surprisingly good, and eating them saves you money.

Curious as to what time she’s eating lunch at school. The step kid will sometimes grab a snack when she gets to our house after school (around 5 pm) because she has second lunch and it’s at like 11:00 am.

Instead of throwing a fit, why not make sure there’s healthy options that are portioned appropriately so she doesn’t spoil her dinner but it holds her over?

First, on a purely practical side, I would rather buy a meal that they won't eat (likely someone will eventually, as leftovers) than be around a hangry teenager for 2.5 hours!

Second, I have never raised or been around teenagers that didn't eat almost every day as soon as they got home from school.

Third, I don't want anyone telling me if I am hungry I can't eat for over 2 hours BUT it is fair to remind me that we are going out to eat as I am good about forgetting things like that especially if I am not excited to go.

When did she last eat…school lunch 4-5 hrs earlier?

6-7 hrs no eat until birthday dinner?

You sound like one of them old school football coaches who wanted team “hungry” at start of game time. Near empty tank at kick off. Blood sugar non existent in 2nd half.

Let her have a snack.

If she did this in front of her daughter, you should divorce her

frick that. My daughter knows all about what foods will make her gain weight. She’s all about a high protein/high fat diet to support her sports.

Probably been said already, but I feel like this is more about
quote:

Step daughter

than it is about
quote:

you don’t tell a teenage girl anything about eating
(which is a silly thing to say taken by itself).

Blended families sound hard and I commend the adults who do it. All I can say is that maybe you and the wife have a discussion (without the daughter around) about what the boundaries are because it’s not clear to you (use the words “me” and “I” so it doesn’t turn into a fight).

"And you don't attack me like that. If you have a problem or a concern, talk to me like I'm your partner, not your enemy."

Seriously, that kind of shite needs to be nipped in the bud asap.
