My wife was just diagnosed with Alpha Gal, the tick-borne meat allergy.

We think she probably got exposed last fall and has had it for a while but her reaction to eating red meat has been pretty muted. She doesn't break out in hives or go into anaphylactic shock.

Are any of you dealing with this?

Two great Radiolab shows on this.

radiolab (also available on Spotify)

Because of the first episode some scientist developed meat without Alpha Gal.

Had an acquaintance deal with that for many years. And his reactions were god awful pain.

Good news: it eventually totally went away. He can eat meat now.

What area are you in? I have a cousin with it in Mo, he carries an epipen and has to bring his own food everywhere.

Somebody on here has it. I leave it to him to chime in if he wants to.

shite is everywhere in Tennessee.

I'm terrified. It can lead to dairy allergy too I believe, as it comes from cows.

I don't know what I'd do. Meat and dairy are my two main food groups.

What makes her an alpha gal? Can she bench press over 200 lbs? Can she toss a 50 lb bag of dog food like it’s nothing?

i was diagnosed a few weeks ago, only reactions I've had so far are bad hives. I cut out meat and dairy (i can still have bird and seafood) and haven't had any issues since, I've got an appointment tomorrow with a allergist

My buddy had it. He has serious reactions to red meat for a few years. Lots of chicken and fish in your wife's future.

It eventually did go away, so that is a positive.

If you are so inclined, I would love to hear the results of what the allergist says. We're trying to get an appointment with one.
