Was at the beach with my boat on Mothers Day, per mommas request. Boat hadnt been in the water in at least a year. Cleaned up the boat but like a dumbass forgot to clean out the bilge area. Ground and anchor at the beach and notice my transom is lapping water after about 30. Emergency. Im swamped. Start bailing and check the bilge pump. Its running but not pumping water. Check the discharge line at the thru-hull and notice a blockage. Clear the blockage and it runs for a few and clogs again. Rip the pump out of the bottom of the bilge and the pump intake is completely clogged with gunk.

Make a long story shorter, got the water out but the bilge area was full of debris. How many of yall have backup bilge pumps and has this ever happened to any of yall that store your boats out in the open, uncovered? Im debating whether or not I need to make arrangements to park the boat under cover to prevent this in the future or if this was just an odd and uncommon occurrence. I did notice what appeared to be shredded fiberglass batting for some strange reason.

At the very least you need to put a boat cover on it.

2nd, I bet you don't make that mistake again.

That's probably a good idea.

While a redundant system is the smart way to go. A wise man once told me "son, all a bilge pump will do is delay the inevitable."

After being a lifelong boater- I decided to stop sinking my money into a boat that could sink. Sold the boat year ago

And to prove my man card I got involved in another bucket with holes hobby

The two happiest days of a boat owners life:

Eh, it's like anything mechanical that sits out in the open for long periods of time... the longer it sits, the more problems you'll have. Get a cover and do regular maintenance on it and you shouldn't sink it (still need to do a pre-launch check to install drain plug, etc) - at the very least it should be inspected well before use after sitting so long. Of course, you already knew all of this, didn't you?

Its cheaper to rent a boat for a day if your only using the thing once a year. No maintenance, insurance, etc.

But since it's been sitting that long and fiberglass is fouling up the bilge you may want to look at that transom, may be rotted.

Are you retarded? Serious question.

If leaves and debris are getting in your boat and bilge area that's bad. If your boat was covered to prevent this, that's good.
