My daughter transferred out of LSU last Christmas break. Mid year!! Lived on Burbank around the bend from Nicholson. Not a bad area, we thought! The amount of crime going on daily in that area is unbelievable. In a secure, gated complex, burglary, cars stolen, assaults all quite common. Haven’t you seen it on the local news?!?!? Nah, of course not. They’re not talking about it. I was thrilled when she decided to transfer out, and I’m an LSU graduate!! Regardless of enrollment gains, it is 100% fact that LOTS of HS kids are now looking at alternatives. UL and Tech are pulling a lot of kids. LSU is developing a reputation, and it’s not good. BR is just NOLA with a cute name.

Yea Bama is a weird example of that being true.
Even at Bama, it has more to do with the scholarship money they started throwing at out-of-state students pre-Saban.

Bama gives out tons of scholarship money and heavily recruits cities like Chicago ..that has a lot to do with their increased numbers

The enrollment growth has very little, if anything, to do with the NC. Evidence of the Flutie effect is mixed, at best.

The Flutie effect happens virtually every time, and it’s usually delayed by a year or two.

You chose wisely. I’ve also informed my kiddos that LSU is out. But in full transparency, it’s been out for some time now.

No, it doesn't. And the extra applicants you do get are often lower quality students that don't get admitted.

Funny you say that. Good friends here in Fort Worth were scheduled to take their daughter for a follow up visit to LSU this weekend. Cancelled and ruled out LSU because of this murder.

True story.

LSU is getting enrollment bumps due to lower the standards to let in TONS of students who should be in community college or some other small lesser school. LSU is the alleged flagship school and it should be run as such.

I believe you. But the football success has also played a role.

I'd love to know who downvoted that post six times. Everything you said is true. Lots of crime is being unreported and swept under the rug.

I only downvoted it once because that's all I can do. The post is emotional hyperbole. LSU just "pulled" its largest freshman class ever, and the average GPA and ACT scores are the highest ever. Yes, Baton Rouge has crime issues that need to be addressed and the citizens need to hear from the leaders that they're committed to fixing it. LSU is not to blame for this, nor is LSU suffering because of it. If things get much worse, that could change.

It isn’t. It was completely accurate. Crime is absolutely horrible around campus with break ins, robberies, and car thefts happening in “luxury” apartment complexes behind locked gates.

You realize both of these situations can be true simultaneously, right?

This isn’t an either/or situation. Yes, LSU is breaking records in freshman numbers. Crime is also at record levels around campus, targeting LSU students, and it is being pushed under the rug.

No. LSU is not to blame. YES LSU is suffering because of it.

It sure looks like things are headed in the wrong direction. Some organizations are investing a lot of money in these areas surrounded by crime-ridden areas near downtown and mid-city.

There's a reason why these type of organizations stopped investing in North Baton Rouge. All the screaming about "food deserts" won't convince someone to invest heavily inside a daily crime scene.

The local "leaders" had better start leading a way out of the mess they've tolerated far too long....

WBRZ

LSU walks back reports of campus kidnappings; school addresses recent crimes in new statement

quote:

LSUPD investigated the Aug. 19 attempted armed robbery and shooting and found it was not a random crime and involved two individuals who were known to each other. A warrant is out for the suspect’s arrest.

quote:

The Aug. 24 incident reported as a kidnapping has been fully investigated, and based on their investigation, LSU PD determined that a kidnapping did not occur. No criminal charges are being filed, and this case is closed.

quote:

The Aug. 25 incident reported as an attempted kidnapping was also investigated and determined to not have been a kidnapping attempt. However, a suspect has been arrested and charged with misdemeanor simple battery and simple assault.

So since it's not random crime or actual kidnapping it’s really not all that bad

Well, maybe that... and also maybe the fact there isn't students being murdered there. Nor that occasional campus rape, kidnapping, and car break-ins.

I honestly feel like BR's leaders here could give a frick. If anything, they might even be a little irritated that one pesky murder is getting all this attention. And you know what else? That isn't gonna change. There isn't a more caring, more focused group of politicians on the horizon who will save the day. Like I've increasingly said, BR's future leaders will probably each be worse than their predecessor. Mayor, police chief, DA, judges, school board members, dog catchers. It all rolls downhill.

LSU's inaction will get them lumped in with that. Is that where they really want to be?

BRPD is defeated. They are just covering the retreat until everyone that wants out gets out.

My grandson is a sophomore at Tech. His senior high school year when he was contemplating colleges and mentioned LSU.His parents told him to forget about LSU or anything in N O.

He got a scholarship to Tech and is doing well.

If you want to see Baton Rouge in 10 years just search YouTube for crime in South Africa. In 10 years there will be more private security companies than police. If you want protection, you’ll have to pay for it.
