“Dogs’ lives are short, too short, but you know that going in. You know the pain is coming, you’re going to lose a dog, and there’s going to be great anguish, so you live fully in the moment with her, never fail to share her joy or delight in her innocence, because you can’t support the illusion that a dog can be your lifelong companion.
There’s such beauty in the hard honesty of that, in accepting and giving love while always aware that it comes with an unbearable price.” – Dean Koontz

The dogs that just appear like this are the best. They just show up in your life and say 'Hey, I'm your dog now.'. Had one show up randomly at my house back in 2003. Had him for 13 years. Sorry for your loss man, I know it's not easy.

LINK

I suck at posting photos and/or embedding YouTube videos, but that’s a link to Shovels & Rope’s song “Love Song From a Dog”.

I promise you, your sweet Layla loved you as much as you loved her.

You’re so right.

They are gifts from God if we have the sense to realize it.

I dread the day I have to say goodbye to them for the last time.

I went through a couple divorces and both of my parents passed (after living long, productive lives). Losing my Schnauzer was the most difficult day of my life. Happened suddenly and I didn’t get to tell him bye. He was by side every day for many years, but not enough. Truck, motorcycle, ATV or wheelbarrow…If it had wheels, he wanted to ride.

Sweet girl. Great life.

As long as my 13 and 15 yos seem happy and not in pain I hope they stick around a bit longer. They still walk with me multiple times a day.

There are now two downvote stalkers. What a sad existence.

Bring Layla back and take these assholes instead.

I still have frequent remembrances of my past dogs, like yours, they seem irreplaceable. Especially the ones I didn't want lol. Time and chance will bring you a new one to love. Of course you know this and if by chance you don't, then you're in for more fun. Take care.

I’ve never understood those folks. Maybe they’ve lost dogs and express their sympathy that way.

Probably not though. They are of the sad cold hearted “it’s only a dog” persuasion.

I get that.

I’ve lost friends, grandparents, both parents, a sister, and a daughter.

I know the difference between those losses and losing a dog. It’s a different sort of pain and grief but for all that it’s painful and I grieve for the loss of a pet who loved me and mine unconditionally.

So I appreciate the condolences and sympathy expressed by the OT.

I just got on the floor to love on one of my golden retrievers her name is Daisy and she has cancer and won’t be with us much longer but when I pet her I hear her moans of joy and she looks at me straight in eyes with so much love. I hate the time with her is running short as she struggles to get up now but I know deep down when the time comes I will know it. It just sucks I will not get to look into her eyes anymore. Dogs really are souls sent to us to bring us joy and the only thing that sucks is we don’t have enough time with them. Sorry for your lost it sounds like you gave her the best 16 years.

ETA: this post was for the OP sorry I just started typing when I saw this thread
