It’s a long shot, but scientists are about to listen very closely for radio signals from our solar system’s first known interstellar visitor

So far limited observations of ‘Oumuamua, using facilities such as the SETI Institute’s Allen Telescope Array, have turned up nothing. But this Wednesday at 3 p.m. Eastern time, the Breakthrough Listen project will aim the West Virgina-based 100-meter Green Bank Telescope at ‘Oumuamua for 10 hours of observations in a wide range of radio frequencies, scanning the object across its entire rotation in search of any signals. Breakthrough Listen is part of billionaire Yuri Milner’s Breakthrough Initiatives program, a collection of lavishly-funded efforts aiming to uncover evidence of life elsewhere in the universe. Other projects include Breakthrough Starshot, which intends to develop and launch interstellar probes, as well as Breakthrough Watch, which would use large telescopes to study exoplanets for signs of life.

Eventually it’s gonna be the scientist that cried alien and we’re going to get fricked up.

What if it’s not a rock though?

Nah that’s going to be an announcement about another exoplanet in a habitable zone found. Oumuamua is actually currently here in our solar system.

Trying to make contact with a much smarter and advanced life form seems like a very very bad idea.

We had a camp at Green Bank, across from Observatory, growing up. Used to hunt and fish that area. I remember when this big, 300ft telescope, crashed over. Picture doesn't do it justice. It was massive.

I’m glad that Oumuamua is being checked for radio signals but it seems unlikely to me that a civilization capable of interstellar travel world still be using such a primitive method of communication. More likely would be a system based upon quantum entanglement.

They would be able to communicate with Oumuamua instantly across any distance with such a device. We would have no way of detecting such communication with our current abilities.

I hope that announcement has to do with KIC 8462852. Google’s AI might have noticed something that humans aren’t capable of discerning.

.....known to the general public. However, we are not privy to any of their secret communications abilities.

I agree with this.

No. Just no. It’s fine to hope that science is farther along than what the public sees but a practical application of quantum entanglement is further down the technology road. That and the use of quantum tunneling will be far too big to keep under wraps by any person, institution or government.
