Not to mention for it to work right I think you’d need to be in possession of one of the entangled particles. One being on board the ship and the other being on the alien planet. There would be no way for us to receive such communication.

Right. That's the way entangled communication would work. Radio waves, lasers or any other device that uses light will have a broad application that gets broader, and more dilute, as it moves through space. They're relatively easy to detect.

Relative to quantum entanglement, that is. With this method, there would be no "leaking," broadening, etc. There would be nothing to detect.

We know that quantum entanglement is real because experiments have confirmed it. However, using it is not possible at this time. Maybe in another 10-20 years.

Yeah, but assuming it is artificial, then this craft was sent here to contact us. Being more advanced, they would know our current capabilities. Radio signals would be a basic form of communication.

It's been replaced by a newer one. Although I'm a fan of radio astronomy it does mean cell reception at nearby Snowshoe resort is awful. By law nobody can operate anything nearby that emits radio waves, you're in a bubble of sorts.

A smart bomb sent out by aliens to eliminate competition. If it sees reasonable inteligence it will detonate. That particular model could literally blow our planet to bits.

However the species that sent this thing saw some of our television programs (Kardashians, for example) and heard our "hit" music (Ariana's snatch is Grande, for example) and realized we'll never amount to a threat to them.
They scrapped the project.

Not necessarily. Oumuamua is zooming through our solar system. If it's being guided by an intelligence, then a better assumption is that the aliens are using the sun's gravity to change the craft's speed and direction. That's actually what's happening with Oumuamua.

They might know but not be interested in us. I'm sure that signs of life and even technology are evident in our atmosphere for an alien civilization to detect. However, there might be billions of worlds where they'd see that. We'll begin to learn the actual numbers next October when the James Webb Space Telescope launches.

Yes, and that's a good thought. It justifies our current effort to look for radio waves from other civilizations. The problem with radio waves is that the further away they're generated, the less detectable they are. So, if we do detect any we can assume they're from a neighbor solar system or from a spacecraft nearby.

I am of the belief advance species with interstellar travel capabilities don’t exist. Somewhere when single cell organisms convert to multiple cell organisms lies the great filter. We might be the advanced aliens.

What's stupid about this is that you are thinking aliens are going to use radiowaves, transmitted through a ROCK?

That doesn't even make sense.

At this point in our search, any viewpoint is as valid as any other. The numbers we're seeing for earthlike planets in the habitable zones of their stars, however, certainly make the search worthwhile.

Estimates vary from 9 billion to 33 billion in our galaxy alone. With an updated estimate of 2 trillion galaxies in the observable Universe, Drake's Equation doesn't look as ridiculous as it once did.

quote:

Somewhere when single cell organisms convert to multiple cell organisms lies the great filter.

Well, the conversion on earth took about 3 billion years. That's when oxygen levels in the atmosphere and ocean rose to the point where single cell organisms could build collagen, the connective tissue that's dependent upon oxygen. Now they could grow into multicellular organisms and form living structures.

That was certainly a big filter for life on earth to overcome but it wasn't the biggest, or most important one. Intelligence was still to come.

We are fortunate to live on a rich, life-friendly planet in a quiet, stable neighborhood in the galaxy. It has taken 4.5 billion years for technology-producing intelligence to evolve here and, using our only example, us, we can say that this is the greatest filter of all.

We've only been "modern humans" for about 55,000 years and we have mastered our biosphere to a far greater degree than any species before us. We are attempting to extend our influence beyond our home planet. We won't be able to leave earth but our technology, and the AI species it produces, certainly can and will.

quote:

We might be the advanced aliens.

If there is a scheme to life then, yes, we are rather advanced. We are creating technology and advancing it at an exponential rate. We will create conscious AI this century and it will replace us as the most advanced species on earth.

It won't exterminate us as Elon Musk and Stephen Hawking warn, but will simply exist alongside us since our two species will not be in competition for resources. AI will quickly evolve into artificial super intelligence (ASI) and embark into the Univers, where we can't follow.
