A federal jury on Thursday delivered a split verdict in New Orleans’ blockbuster staged wrecks case, convicting a disbarred Jefferson Parish attorney of running the yearslong insurance fraud scheme but deadlocking on murder-conspiracy counts he’d faced for the slaying of a key FBI informant.

Jurors deliberated for more than 30 hours over five days before delivering the stunning mixed verdict against disbarred lawyer Sean Alfortish and a codefendant, Leon “Chunky” Parker, who had been accused of pulling the trigger that killed Cornelius Garrison III.

quote:

Alfortish was convicted of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and two counts of mail fraud he’d faced for overseeing the staged wrecks scheme, according to the verdict read in court Thursday by Chief U.S. District Judge Wendy Vitter.

The jury was hung on a slew of murder-conspiracy counts tied to Garrison’s killing, including with a count each of retaliation against a witness through murder and causing death through use of a firearm. Parker, who has pleaded guilty to wire fraud for participating in a staged collision, had been charged with those counts, too, meaning the jury reached no verdict against him.

quote:

The jury found Alfortish not guilty on obstruction of justice and subornation of perjury over a jailhouse saga in which he’d been accused of paying another prisoner to lie in his defense.

quote:

Vitter declared a mistrial over the five charges on which the jury reached no verdict. Assistant U.S. Attorney Matthew Payne, one of the prosecutors on the case, asked the judge to set a hearing to pick a new trial date on the murder counts.
it appears the evidence presented on the murder counts did not remove reasonable doubt

I thought the evidence on the murder was pretty compelling, but at a minimum there should be stiff sentences on the slammer stuff.

Did the jury think this witness just magically got blasted right as they were lining him up to testify against these guys? Did they present evidence of others with motive to kill him?

Damn, the witness that was shot to death was Cornelius Garrison, in which the killer was Leon “Chunky” Parker, who was the stepfather of Garrison.

Just read that Alfortish got a not guilty verdict on the obstruction counts. So he may actually get less time than Motta. Which is crazy. Wonder what the vote was on the murder count.

Alfortish can get up to 20 years on each of the 3 counts he was convicted on. Hopefully the court throws the book at him and gives him the max to run consecutively.

He's not a full Alfort. He's just Alfortish

Did you follow the case whatsoever ?the governments star witness may have been the one involved in the murder. The government’s case was based only on circumstantial evidence and the word of someone with zero credibility.

Alfortish may well have masterminded it but the hard evidence was not there.

Alfortish set up the murder of the witness, no doubt. Alfortish knew if Garrison testified his multimillion-dollar scam would be upended. Alfortish was paying "slammers" tens of thousands of dollars at a time. The guy is a fricking scumbag.

Vitter is going to hammer him on the fraud counts. The government will re-try on the murder on principle alone.

Vannessa Motta, a former Hollywood stuntwoman and disbarred New Orleans attorney, who was the fiancée of Alfortish and co-defendant in the case.

Given his prior federal conviction, which is used in a sentence calculation and adds in time, he will probably get much more time than her.

slammer scheme

For a second there I flashed back to fifth grade where we had a big Pogs kerfuffle. It was a whole mess.
