My son is taking dual enrollment classes this year (Jr), in LA. Guess that is close, he gets college credit.

I did not like AP because you take the test at the end of the year and it’s pass or fail so you may do well the entire year but fail the test and not get college credit. Dual enrollment is not like that.

Another thing that turned me off to AP was how it was manipulated in the accountability formula.

in Louisiana many schools offer dual enrollment either through local university or through remote courses

We live in Georgia and my daughter has taken college classes as a junior. Her senior year will be solely at the academy she’s taking her college classes at.

Should finish with 31 credit hours for free. She also got accepted into a health care class that will certify her as a medical assistant, lobotomist, and patient care assistant.

Only thing keeping us from moving to Tn is the free college credits.

Between AP classes and Early College my son entered Alabama with 3 semesters behind him. He graduated high school in 2017 and Alabama in December 2020.

My oldest graduated from St Amant with a bunch of dual enrollment hours. She was basically a college sophomore before she stepped a foot on college campus

Not mad at this at all.

Wish i could have done this.

Imagine being 18 in the fall semester of what’s supposed to be your freshmen year and you are already into your sophomore classes

Graduate from college by 20 years old. Freaking awesome!

Woods said the program is different from dual enrollment, a program where students can complete college courses for high school credit while still being enrolled in high school classes.

“They would no longer be enrolled in high school, they would be enrolled in college,”

I honestly think this is better than Dual Enrollment (at least the way it’s administered here in GA).

Dual Enrollment tries to “mash together” two different objectives (HS grad requirement and college credit) which can lead to some administrative confusion. The “linkage” between the HS and participating colleges is not necessarily seamless.

Dual enrollment?

Or is this something different?

Because we had that in GA.

This is a little different. They would be unenrolled from HS, enrolled in college and have their college course work count towards their HS grad requirement. Basically get your HS diploma as a college freshman or sophomore.

I did this in 1977-78. I had to get 30 hours with a 3.0 to graduate from high school. I got a GED in the mail dated February 28, 1978. Graduated from LSU in May 1980.

The old Delgado campus in Slidell let high school seniors come in early - we had half days anyway and I knocked out college freshman level math, public speaking, and a literature course in the afternoons before I graduated. I think I had 12 credits that transferred.

I graduated with 33 college credit hours and I grew up in a tiny town in west Texas. Made college much more difficult due to taking nothing but core classes but I liked it because I didn't have to take any of the dumbass social electives like art history or some bullshite. I also was 1/7 in my graduating class with a double major as a result.

I scored so much poon in those electives, I couldn't count 'em all.

I’m sure all the other states are doing this already besides Alabama.

I don't know how the old law was worded, but Alabama has always had dual enrollment. I have a cousin who had an associate's degree before she graduated high school.

I don't know that AL has ever "prevented" kids in HS from enrolling in college. My son graduated HS in the spring of 2023. Due to a combination of dual enrollment credits, Clep tests, and absolutely working his butt off, he will graduate college in the fall of 2025 with a double major. He will begin work on his graduate degree spring of 2026.

He certainly had plenty of extra-curricular stuff in HS. He played two sports and has done all of his college classes while on athletic scholarship and all the time requirements that go along with that. Very little NIL opportunity for him, but the scholarship itself has been a HUGE blessing for our family. He will graduate with a master's degree and no debt for him or us.

His girlfriend graduated HS spring of 2024 and will finish her undergrad stuff before he will. She was basically doing full time HS and full time college at the same time, while also being a majorette. I'm not sure what this new law changes, but nothing has been stopping the motivated kids as things have been.

One caution is that AP is “risk free” in that nothing you do, good or bad, impacts your college GPA. You either earn the score to get credit or not. Dual enrollment, you earn a grade that follows you in terms of GPA.

AP credits are also more portable to private colleges.

Lafayette has Early College Academy. It's located on the SLCC campus. They take college classes their junior and senior year. They will graduate with an Associates Degree and 60 hours of college credit that will transfer to any Louisiana Public University. Currently the #1 rated public high school in Louisiana. Each class has about 50 kids. Our child is finishing up his Junior Year and loves it. They take 12 hours a semester. We don't pay anything for tuition, just his books. Really a great deal if you have a strong, academically focused kid.

My son graduates high school in 2 weeks 2 classes short of being a sophomore in college. That’s going to save a nice chuck of change at TCU.
