You mean to tell me we shouldn’t let developing children make life altering decisions that often lead to depression and suicide?!?

I wonder how they would enforce this since there are other medical uses for puberty blockers. Just prescribing them wouldn't be evidence of using them for gender transition.
I assume based on the wording of the article that those other uses would be allowed, but I'm no lawyer.

The article says "The bill makes it a felony, punishable by up to 10 years in prison, to prescribe puberty blockers or hormones to transgender people under age 19 to help in their gender transition," so I guess puberty blockers can be used for other situations besides gender transitions.

Sure.... but what's the age of consent????

Wonder why they chose 19, wouldn't the individual be able to take over medical decisions at 18?
I figured because kids turn 18 when still in high school, so they're trying to keep this stuff out of schools.

AL is weird when it comes to this. Back before you had to be 21 to buy tobacco under federal law, most states were 18. AL was 19.
Maybe it has something to do with that. Maybe not.
When every other state was going from 21 to 18, Alabama worried that 18 would allow high school kids to buy beer, so to protect them from themselves, they made it 19, not that that stopped them from buying beer.

Not really as I don’t expect much from our states lawmakers. We’ve already decided we are leaving this backwards state once my daughter graduates Hugh school, so I don’t even really follow state politics as closely as I used to.

I'm sure some doctor could get away with lying about why he/she is prescribing puberty blockers, but it seems like it would only be a matter of time before he/she would be found out.

Sorry you can't groom your kid, you fricking weirdo.
I seriously can't get over you claiming the state is backwards in a thread about this specific law. I'm honestly at a loss for words.

Sure, but how would they determine which is which? Presumably someone would report it, maybe a disgruntled family member, then what? The doctor isn't obligated to incriminate himself and it's up to the state to prove a crime has been committed, not the other way around. Maybe there's a HIPAA loophole for subpoenaing medical records in a criminal case, IDK.

I'm not a big fan of the government telling doctors what they can and can't do, but once you put the medical industry firmly in the free market, it would be naive to expect doctors to adhere to the Hippocratic Oath over profits.

Probably because of the high % of kids that fail in school there and thus are still 19 years old in high school.

19 is the age you are considered a legal adult in Alabama. Custody arrangements in Alabama go to age 19.
Yea I want to say it has something to do with people still being in High School at 18. I was my senior year based on when my birthday was and how we started elementary school. I may be wrong there though.

I think you're right. 2 of my kids will be 18 as high school seniors. The other one will be starting her sophomore year in college when she turns 19.
It all depends on the cut off date for Kindergarten the year they start school.
