I lived near a real small airport. I remember seeing an absurd amount of large planes sitting there for a couple of days.

I'm so sorry. I was 32 at the time, knew no one there/around there who was affected and I'm still heartbroken every year on this day.

If you don't mind me asking, were you flying that day?

My mom was stuck in Hawaii on a business trip on 9/11. She was supposed to come back that day but was stranded there all week. I'm glad I was young and didn't realize how scary that actually was. Can't even imagine what that flight back must have been like.

Cant imagine what air traffic controllers were going through either.

very surreal, I was in bed when the first plane hit, within minutes there were three flight attendants banging on my door, I went to the door, in my boxers, and they were screaming "they're flying planes into buildings," I let them in, turned on the tv in time to see the second plane hit the WTC, about that time my phone rang, a friend of mine asking where I was, maybe I should try to rent a van, bus, anything to get my people out of there, and at that time a four ship of F-16s flew right over the hotel on a CAP, lots of things going on to process

"Ben Sliney is a former United States Federal Aviation Administration National Operations Manager. His first day in this position was September 11, 2001, and he was responsible for ordering a National Ground Stop across United States airspace in response to the terrorist attacks of 9/11"

If it's even on there, it's probably one of last few heading towards Barksdale AFB. It was crazy walking out back and watching it and it's escorts prepare to land. We lived in South Bossier parallel to the flight line so that day anytime we heard an aircraft we would run out back to see what was coming.

Like everybody else, they were in shock, but once the order to ground all planes (an order never given before nor ever practiced), they systematically and safely shut down the system, landing every plane safely in under two hours. It was an extraordinary effort, though under-publicized due to the horrors unfolding in NYC and DC.

Now that is a cool visual. Something id never seen before. Glad they made that quick call to ground all aircraft.

I remember my dad picking me up from school in DC, which was odd because he was scheduled to fly out that morning from Dulles.

My mom got pissed when she found up he picked me up saying "well they aren't going to fly a plane into a school"...

The 2 F-16s sortied after Flt93 were unarmed. Ordered to bring it down the leader decided he would ram the cockpit while his wingman was told that she was to take out the tail. Yep a she.

was on a chopper heading to my rig. it was 9:15am and two fighter jets had banked on each side of us. these were the fighters that were escorting bush to shreveport from florida. supposedly, they were about 600 miles from airforce 1. now.......i always get funny looks when i tell people the following:

if these two birds were on our arse at 9:15am, how could we not have scrambled a fighter jet at 10:20am to intercept flight 93? or.........did we?

Never been on a chopper that didn’t have a radio and couldn’t have known about this.

Why were the fighters escorting AF1 600mi from the objective?

Why, out of all the hundreds of chopper flights across south LA every morning were you assigned 4 fighters...that were escorting AF1 600mi away no less?

Looks like a glitch. The last one is probably that one from MIA, and it definitely took off two hours after all planes were told to get down

Nat geo just had a show on about the air traffic control at the Gander airport. Landed a plane every 5 minutes for 4 hours straight on only 1 runway. Planes destined to cities further inland had to dump fuel to reach max landing weight. All in ll those small canadian airports landed 224 planes in 4 hours. Most of the passengers stayed on those parked planes for over 24 hours

It was a strange day for air traffic.

I’ll never forget the call from ZME. Ok, we’re going to start flashing arrivals that don’t normally land there. We’re putting everyone on the ground”.
Then the call to watch for any targets around the nuclear power plant. Seemed a lot like war then.
Lots of military chatter on Guard Freq and raw targets of fast moving flights.
