Very cool. This I will NEVER forget! I was flying the entire time the shite hit the fan. I had a taken a redeye back from the west coast, Portland IIRC and connected in DFW and to MSY after. I fly ALL THE TIME. I noticed on the latter part of the MSY flight something strange. The pilot was flying balls to the wall and flew over the swamp which was rare. Even though it was fine outside I was thinking., "hmm, storm?" Anyway, while landing in NOLA there were firetrucks, police cars, EMS all driving around the airport with siren waling. I was gone for a week. I assumed people were mass evacuating for a hurricane. So I was thinking I needed to just put my head down and GTFO to try and avoid traffic. So, when we landed I took my bag and headed straight to my car parked on top deck of NOLA airport parking garage.
I quickly jumped on the interstate and forgot about the airport calamity and turned on my Nokia. I had like 10 missed VM's which was odd for that early in the morning. As I was getting ready to check my first voice mail I saw a call from my wife. I answered, "hey" and she interrupted me and was balling her eyes out at the time. She said, "OMG your alive and I said of course I'm alive." "What's going on?" She said, "We are under attack" . I said, "bullshite, I'm out on I-10 headed to BR now and theres barely anyone on the road" . She says, "turn on the radio" - I said, "What station?" She replied, "ANY STATION!"
By the time I turned on the radio I think both towers and the pentagon had already been hit. The rest of that day was a blur because I think I may have went into a little shock because the fact I realized I was flying during the whole time shook me. I still fly all the time. I'll be flying tomorrow. I'm not exactly thrilled about it TBH.

I believe there were rumors that some of the last flights were Saudi’s being encouraged to go home. I think it included a flight out of Houston. (I read this stuff years ago).

At the time I drove past the airport and UPS hub here in Louisville on my way to school. When the kids I work with ask about it, I always tell them the most unsettling thing was driving past the airport without a plane in the sky for a few days. You don’t realize how things like that fill in the background noise in your daily life and how it’s so noticeable when it’s not there. Uncanny.

What is the deal with the one plane near NC at the end missling towards the Atlantic?
Posted on 9/11/19 at 9:27 am to East Coast Band
Look at Newfoundland towards the end there to see all the overseas planes that were redirected to that little town.

Are there any photos of some of the airfields where the planes were sent?
As I recall, planes were ordered down at the closest airports where they could land, regardless of destination.
I would have to imagine some tight quarters at some of those places.

The name of the town was Gander. They took in 6700 strangers that day.

yep, there are very limited facilities at some of those diversion cities, lots of passengers and crews stayed in homes of some of the citizens due to lack of hotel rooms, some planes were diverted to other airports with even less facilities because there was literally no room on the field to accommodate any more aircraft
