The trailblazers were notorious for having the cluster fail.

What you need to ask yourself is how the speedometer functions. Did any of the repairs involve them in removing or working near any aspect of speedometers system. If they not work near it or remove parts related to its functionality then it's not their fault. The service manager is being a dick because he knows how that part can fail and he knows it's impossible to damage it during brake and power steering repairs. Cars break and the strangest times. Woes of an older vehicle.

Had a trailblazer back in the day, I can’t remember but it was an 01-03. The speedometer and tachometer both died and I think it was $200 at the dealer.

If you aren't an auto mechanic, or you don't have one in your immediate family, you'll likely never meet an honest one. Also, sometimes mechanics take their life and job frustrations out on your vehicle!

You need a new instrument cluster. The part is about $300 and you can switch it out yourself.
There are a couple guys out there that you can send it off to and they will repair it for a fraction of the cost.
It’s literally a plug and play part with a couple screws to keep it in place.
If you search YouTube there is a probably a how to video.
This is a common issue with GM vehicles in your year range.
Lastly, the Envoy is a GMC product.

Yes - have Chevy on my mind because it's a Chevy dealership- and we just bought a Chevy.

2003-2006 Chevys were known to have faulty speedometers.

I wouldn't even worry about the fricking speedometer then

I'm at that point. Just wondering if I should walk away, or spend the time and energy following up with the owner regarding how it was handled.

We just had a very pleasant experience in a similar situation. The body shop had our suv over the freezes days in BR. We finally get it back and AC is out. Get it Diagnosed at repair shop and it's a 1200 fix that they are certain was caused by a rat.
We called the body shop expecting no action. We just wanted to let them know about the rat problem. They paid half without even asking for a penny.
TLDR doesn't hurt to ask and plead your case.

Jason Payne and the guys at K&M are very honest. There's another place with similar reputation in Walker but name escapes me. Both are OT certified.

Yeah - I made my case: speedometer worked fine when we dropped it off, doesn't work now. I initially started working the issue with the sales manager since the service manager wouldn't return my calls. I ask sales manager what his reaction would be in that same situation. He was too professional to respond directly but basically said he'd be pissed and expect some form of accommodation.
Coincidentally, at the same time the Envoy is being serviced my wife brings in her Acadia for an oil change and asks for new wiper blades. This is the first time they'd been changed. Gets vehicle back and there's a scratch in the shape of an arc along the path of the drivers side blade.
So the shop is either unlucky or incompetent. I was willing to let the scratch go, but that's now likely going to be a new windshield because it can't be buffed out.

There is no good reason I can think of to take a 15 year old car to the dealership other than a recall.
This raises a interesting question. At what point do you quit taking your vehicle to the dealer and start taking to a local shop you trust? I have a 2011 Silverado that I bought brand new from Ross Downing in Hammond. They are the only ones that has ever serviced or done any repairs to it. They have always done top notch work and treated me right except for one issue that was corrected quickly. So if it gets to a certain age should I quit taking it to the dealer?

Looking at my statement, I'd say there is a caveat. That being the rare(in my experience) occasion that you find a dealership whose maintenance department you trust that is also reasonable in pricing. Otherwise, if you have a local shop you know and trust, I take mine to them as soon as the warranty has ended. If the repairs are something best done by the dealership (which is occasionally the case) they tell me that.

Sounds to me like you've found someone you trust there. I have had a couple of bad experiences with dealerships, so my opinion is a bit tainted, I suspect.

Why would you eat your vehicle?

Yes I got lucky. My neighbor used to assistant service manager there. Even after she moved on to another dealership I continued to get top notch service. Only recently did I have a issue when they went through some staff changes when a couple of ppl retired did I have a problem. But they fixed it quickly knocked several hundred dollars off the bill and gave me a rental for free even though my truck has long been out of warranty. All without me asking for it. They realized the mistake but fixed it.

Probably a little bit late in this case but I swear by RepairPal. So far I haven't been led wrong by their shops though admittedly I have fairly limited experience using them. Perfect for anything on an older vehicle.
