Things like this article and the one on the Clerk of Court in Baton Rouge seem like old school LA politics and all but they really pale in comparison to the day to day state politics in the north east. Not to mention what happens daily in DC. Not that I am excusing their antics, it pisses me off but this is like comparing the guy who steals a six pack from Circle K to a bank robber. The wcumbags in Washington frick taxpayers for tens of millions and don't bat an eye.
Probably the weirdest thing about it is the low stakes that these guys allow themselves to get screwed over. Like the West Baton Rouge guy last year that lost it all for using his city fuel card to gas up his boat. Dummy.

He is employed as a dentist there. His real job is to autograph stuff in the legislature to keep Burl's budget from getting cut...so I hear.

was he practicing in Opelousas?
Ole Burl Cain runs that place like Col. Jessup ran Quantanamo Bay.

That's probably true.
And above- how about the Fire Chief from Plaquemine driving his kid to BR Magnet in his red fire department Tahoe? What a moron.

I have heard he participates in good ole boy tactics. I think most have looked the other way because he knows what lines not to cross and had overall been good to the area.
His brother was the same way when he was the Senator here.

Yep. He was President of the BOD at one time. The only reason the guy keeps working is he can keep shite covered up as long as he controls it. He is working for free basically.

When you get to be as comfortable as Burl Cain is running his own little kingdom up at Angola and being God-King and Emperor there with his utmost authority, you can get away with a lot of shite there.
I hope I'm wrong but he's never going to be touched by anybody in BR as he knows the right people not to piss off and stay away from. However, the feds are a different story.

Cain has done a world of good at Angola.
Made me think of that story of the former Angola inmate that was moved to another prison. He broke out of the place went to a phone and called Angola begging to be let back in

Cain reminds me of the Warden in Shawshank Redemption. He is as crooked as they come
Got the bible thumping bit down pat too. Any inmate that walks through angola will have a meeting with jesus and accept him as his savior whether he likes it or not and if he resists, he will be in for a very bad time.

Ol' Burl does look shady
Posted on 12/1/15 at 9:09 pm to Petey Wheatstraw
There really isn't a lot of substance or backing to those claims. Many prisoners have come out of Angola with good things to say about Burl.

IMHO, leave him the frick alone. He's a nice guy that makes shite happen. I wouldn't touch this with a 10ft pole of I was a prosecutor
Agree 100000000%. Cain knows how to run a prison. If there is one corrupt public figure I can look past, it's the warden at Angola.
With all the shady, crooked shite that goes on here, Gill must have a personal vendetta to pick on Burl. What a stupid hack.

I mean the guy who wrote the article didn't even spell trustee correctly

My nickname for him is Boss Hogg. I have seen DOC from the inside (as an employee, but not at Angila) and will say that with Burl you get the good with the bad. The good is that he has run the prison in a way that has made it safer than at any other period in its history. The bad is he is as corrupt as you imagine him to be.
He is actually an interesting character study. On the one hand he is a true believer and a very religious man. On the other hand, well, he seems to have a slight problem with this little thing called ethics.

Actually, trusty is correct when talking about an inmate in a trusted position.

What are examples of him being shady and crooked?

Well, there's the whole article being discussed in this thread to start.
Prison Enterprises was always a shady deal, and he had his hands all over that. I seen to recall a couple people being prosecuted there but he was able to avoid it.
He often plays loose with ethics- a lot of tit for tat and quid pro quo. I don't know if you've been to Angola but he treats the place as his own personal fiefdom.
Of course he has to be allowed to get away with this stuff, so DOC secretaries are complicit in any shadiness even if only by turning a blind eye. But the real power in that department is with Cain, and not the secretary. He is actually one of the most powerful unelected people on the state. Has huge influence over civil service.
