Advice on living through a home renovation

Thinking about buying a home that needs work. Total kitchen demo, walls coming down in older style home with tiny closed off kitchen, floors restained, paint work, flooring replacement for bedrooms and bathrooms and master bath total reno.
For those who have bought a house and done this immediately upon moving in, was it pure hell? Or did you space it out over months? Ideally I would love to get it all out the way in the first month. Should we plan to live somewhere else while this is going on or can we suffer through it for the duration of a semi demo/renovation?

Edit: We had things done post hurricane in 2009 and moved out for 4 weeks while all the work was done. Could not fathom living there during, and it wasn’t nearly as invasive/extensive as what you’re saying.

Get a $1500/ month appt and get it all done asap

If you can find somewhere to rent short term, that's basically just adding an extra $3k on the cost of the reno to keep your sanity. I'd do it personally.

You do not want to live there while you are getting work done. It will take longer anyway bc they'll have to clean up every night, try to not interfere with you, etc. It will suck way more.

It depends on the house, but it will SUCK regardless. It's just a matter of degree of suck. Think about things like how many full bathrooms it has and how accessible they are. Time of year and if it's going to screw with insulation and make the ac/heater worthless. It's easiest to not be there but that can add on a significant expense.

This won't happen. These projects always drag on. Budget for 3X time. You'll be ready to strangle contractors by the end of it and be perplexed why they won't just come work and take your money. I've never figured it out.

It will take longer than you think, so know that going in. If you think you are going to have to rough it for two months or pay to live somewhere else for that time, then double it. I'm a sub that comes in later in remodels and the #1 thing I hear is "this has taken way longer than we thought." It will also be more expensive than you think.

no its not. You will spend more on Air BnB than you will getting a month to month appt lease. Air BnB prices are geared towards weekend rental rates which when spread out over a daily span will drastically cost you more than an appt

That seems to be the consensus. I figured that would be the case but wasn’t sure if I was blowing it out of proportion in my mind.
I have built a house before but never renovated one. I guess living in the Reno would be the equivalent of me trying to live in my old home while it was being built. Can’t imagine the dust and general dirtiness with all the workers in and out.
