Drive a shitty car not worth jacking

Dress poor

Daylight is your friend

Spend extra to live in the safest area possible

Get a gun and learn how to shoot it.

We have apartments in Metairie right at the New Orleans/Metairie line. We are renting to a med student, and over the past couple decades have noticed a sparse amount of students living there. Easy access to the highway to get to school in 10 minutes. You don't get the charm of New Orleans though.

Are there rentals in Lakeview? Living there lowers your risk tremendously, but there is still risk.

Growing up there, I learned to always be vigilant. Wallet in my front pocket in the FQ, house doors locked at all times, car doors locked and hiding equipment from view after parking, paying g to park downtown close to the business instead of parking on the street and having to walk blocks. Your awareness level has to be heightened.

Live in Jefferson Parish.

Metairie, Harahan, River Ridge, old Gretna are all a short commute to LSU-NO and pretty safe.

If you are looking to live in the city and money is not a huge issue, look for a place Uptown. That’s a broad, generic term, but it will give you a general idea of where to look. In terms of more specific areas within Uptown, starting at Jackson Ave. below St. Charles (river side) all the way to Audubon Park you can’t really go wrong. Above St. Charles (lake side), starting at Louisiana stay within a few blocks north of St. Charles and as you move westbound, you can venture further north—but the closer you get to Claiborne, the area is less nice. But, starting at Napoleon, the Fontainebleau area above Claiborne (lake side) all the way to Carrollton Ave. is a pretty quiet residential area (just avoid getting too close to Earhardt to the north).

If you still want to be in Nola, but you’re looking for a cheaper place to stay while remaining in a relatively safe neighborhood, look in Lakeview or Navarre.

Stay in Texas, that's what my kid did and never looked back. NOLA is great experience if you are at University Hospital...plenty of stabbing and gunshot victims to work on.

Have had some medical students through the years on my street in Lakeview.

The crime problems are nationwide. It is the result of a sick dysfunctional segment of American society unfortunately. If you spend your life running from it, it’ll always be your focus unfortunately.

There are safe places to live. Just do some research. Live in a suburb if you must. Commutes aren’t bad in the metro area.

Find an apartment in Old Metairie. Drive around since a lot of people don’t advertise. Personally I’d avoid Lakeview. I have friends whose vehicles have been broken into many times.
Also Jefferson Parish just approved a tax hike this weekend for JPSO. With better salaries and better leadership, across the parish line, the bleeding at NOPD won’t stop anytime soon.

The problem is that Shreveport is also a crime infested shite hole,

It is but you can live much safer and fairly cheaply 20 miles or less away without a god awful commute. At least you could 20 - 25 years ago.

I actually came wondering if the OP had a shreveport option when I saw your post.

There's a lot more to worry about living in the city than living out of it. For her last 2 years there I was dropping her off and picking her up from every rotation I could because of the lawlessness there. We were never comfortable. The situation there is very concerning. It is not a safe place to live or work and anywhere you are in the city, you're no more than 2 blocks away from a world of shite.

I bet you live in an underground bunker…

Look I’ll give the city shite, and I’ve worked, and currently still do, for 32 years, and never had a single thing happen to me. You sound like some paranoid person who constantly looks out the window…

LSU-NO was a great experience and great time, I finished within the past 10 years.

Do the math on your other options - if you get into a Texas school and cost is similar that would be a fine option most likely.

You will get fantastic training at LSU-NO.
If you're a homebody, save money and live in Metairie/Harahan/RR but traffic will be terrible driving in for class (if you go) and rotations.
If you want to live in the city, Uptown or Lakeview. I really enjoyed living Uptown for those years and getting to class and rotations was very easy. The city was safer back then but it's never truly been safe I guess so you just have to decide for yourself.

I can’t think of any reason to live and support such a corrupt city. Pay your taxes to a place that actually wants you there

Not sure why New Orleans gets such a bad rap. I get the crime, but that is every major city? Great night life and attractions

It’s a sinking city with a rising crime rate and no end in sight with the idiotic liberals.

I've lived here my whole life. There are nice areas and ways to get around safely.

LSU Med school prepares you for life anywhere in the country.

My advice is to rent in Lakeview (house with roommates) or live on campus. Probably best to live on campus first then get a rental house.

Lyft/Uber get you around great, just like any other city.

Is it as bad as some of the threads on here make it out to be?

Ehhh. I don’t think so. Numbers don’t lie but I have been here a decade and never had an issue. I certainly have my street smarts though. I am in the river bend area and really enjoy it (probably not a fair comparison to the downtown/Med School area though)
