Not sure if my situation is relevant to yours unless you're loyal to a make and dealership like I am...I've bought several vehicles from my dealership so I paid no deposit and was told to hold off on negotiations until I inspected and yes I did negotiate and got a hell of a deal.
I have a really good friend who was management at one of the dealerships who I'll send an email to. He's made a name for himself so I'm hoping it plays in my favor. I'm going to take LNCHBOX advice and head to the chevy forums.

Depends on the car, depends on the dealership. High end Mercedes could be 10K non-refundable deposit. 2016 Focus - $500 refundable deposit.

If you are a member of Costco, they have a vehicle buying service that can help. If not, check with the Internet Sales rep at larger dealerships in your area.

there is nothing you can do on a chevy colorado to make it special.

I would expect to pay a deposit either way. They'll probably more open to talking total price if you put some money up front. No deposit would likely lead to no leverage on total price on a single vehicle.
I don't imagine this is all that crazy of a request. You'll just have to realize that they're going to want to talk you into buying the closest thing they have in stock and the closest thing they can easily get. Make sure you're clear up front that unless it's an exact match you don't want it so neither of you wastes time on those discussions.

$45k for a Colorado.
I cannot believe there is a market for those.

that's on the low side. I'm seeing Trail Bosses listed at 56K. My F150 FX4 was less than that

Something similar?
Thanks. Something similar. That is one without Bose sound system and trailering package and is overpriced by about $5K without those two additions, also not the color I want. But everything else is what I am looking for. Thank you for the site.

I'm hesitant to even ask because you've been a dick to everyone who wasn't telling you exactly what you wanted to hear, but: have you done a nationwide search for the exact truck? On the big search sites cars.com & autotrader you can narrow it down as far as you could possibly need to see if one is sitting at a dealer in Kalamazoo. It might be easier to negotiate that way vs a local dealer.

It's way overpriced, unless it's a diesel and even then it shouldn't be over $50K. Non-diesels should be under $40K.

since you are ordering it, you can tell the dealer to keep their "dealer prep" and the associated BS charges.

My apologies but there was a lot of bad information on the first page. It didn't so much have to do with what I'm not willing to hear rather than plain wrong information. But I can chalk that up to me not being more specific, so I apologize.

I have not, I've used USAA car buying service and Cargurus. I will try cars.com. Thank you Gary.

When my husband ordered his Jeep last year he paid a $500 deposit iirc and we waited the 4-6 weeks for the Jeep to be built and arrive at dealership.

Woah. Either your boss knows your screen name or you're a much better worker than most of us.

I did this a few years ago. As long as you don't order a silly color or something that most people wouldn't want, they don't need a deposit. If it's a lime green color or giant wheels or just something people wouldn't buy then you'll pay a nice deposit to order. I didn't pay a dime till it was actually on the lot. That took about 8 weeks from the time I ordered it. I built it online threw the dealership and asked around to negotiate prices but they were all about the same since I was being so specific and it wasn't a vehicle they even had on the lot. Some will give you more in terms of service items (free oil changes, etc) so those are negotiable. Some items come as a package and you can negotiate those costs for sure. Overall it's not much different than negotiating for a car on the lot. It's actually easier because you can discuss every addition individually as an adder.
