Advice for factory ordering a vehicle- negotiating tips, deposits, etc.

At the end of this month I am going to start picking up the phone and emailing dealerships within a 150 mile radius in regards to a certain vehicle I want. It will have to be ordered straight from the factory as I haven't seen a lot with the exact specs I want to pay for.
A few questions before I initiate movement on this.
When do I negotiate and lock-in a price for the vehicle? Before it arrives or after? What type of deposit should I put down (refundable/nonrefundable)and how much? For those of you with experience with this, please let me know.
Disclaimer: I will only buy the vehicle with the specs I want and won't settle for anything other than.

That's pretty damn vague. Are you talking about ordering a Honda Civic or a Mercedes? There is a bit of variance dependent upon what type or vehicle you're ordering.

Orders will not be completed (start building, etc) without being paid for 1st, especially in your situation of building a specific vehicle. My suggestion would be to go to dealer and see if they can trade for one that is out there from another dealer, so you do not have to wait and then you can negotiate from there (cheapest route). If you literally build a vehicle and all, then the dealer usually wants to stick to msrp or higher (since they realize you are getting exactly what you want and they are your access to that vehicle). Deposit is something I do not have experience with, so maybe someone else can chime in on that question. GL

I've read and heard about negotiations happening for factory order vehicles. I'm not talking a high end, top of the line vehicle, just a vehicle that isn't allocated as much on the lot.

All of this.
You have almost know leverage on special order.
That's where all the OT carbuying guru advice goes out the window.

That just isn't true. It's not a "special" order (in terms of custom made vehicles, chevy offers everything that I want on this vehicle already). It's an order that the dealership doesn't have on the lot that Chevy offers.
I'm sorry to come off smug, but I'm just really looking for advice from people who have experience doing it.

I ordered my current vehicle to my specs and didn't pay for anything until it was delivered and I inspected...didn't even negotiate price until it was delivered.

You sound like a fricking retard.

You would be better off having the dealership search for the truck you want and swapping with another dealer vs ordering from the factory.
What are the specific things you're looking for? is it color? do you not want it to have certain features or are there certain combinations of options that you want that isn't common?

Finally. How did you go about choosing the right dealership? Did you do a deposit? If you could expand more, I'd really appreciate it.

This is bullshite for trucks.
ETA: Not sure if OP is looking for a truck, just saying your post isn't a universal truth.

Pretty much all of this. The package I want doesn't seem to be offered anywhere near me in 150-300 mile radius. Every dealership I looked up the average allocation was about 8 vehicles on the lot.

It definitely is special. They have to place an order to the factory for that exact vehicle if one isn't available somewhere in the country for them to get.
Either way, you have no leverage and are likely going to pay sticker price. Negotiate deposits as you wish. I would expect to pay 10% up front and 90% when taking delivery.

Truck. I know it's not true. This will be a thread where I have to wade through the uniformed to get solid advice.

OP, can you say what you're interested in so we can decide if these kinds of posts are correct or not?

You're better off going to a forum for the specific truck you're interested in. So many order threads on them. Unless you're looking for say and F150 Limited, you'll still be able to get a good deal on an ordered truck.
ETA: Just saw it was for a Colorado. Not much experience on the GM side of things, but check the forums.

I posted it earlier I thought. But it's a 2016 Chevy Colorado trail boss

Thank you. Will do. I thought I could get some solid advice from here first.

Not sure if my situation is relevant to yours unless you're loyal to a make and dealership like I am...I've bought several vehicles from my dealership so I paid no deposit and was told to hold off on negotiations until I inspected and yes I did negotiate and got a hell of a deal.
