Diagnosed with ADD(don't think ADHD was a thing then) when I was 7 or 8. Teachers got tired of me starting out the window all day, but still making A's on all my tests. Mom refused Ritalin for a few years, but middle school my grades started slipping and we tried it. Grades improved but I hated how it made me feel. Mom took me to some new age hippie psychologist and she worked with me on ways to overcome it.

Tried adderall once during adulthood and absolutely hated it. Felt like a zombie, and once it wore off at the end of the day I was moody and cranky. Now I just deal with it as best I can. Having a job where the potential to do something different every day helps.

Anyway, all that to say find a good therapist that specialized in adult ADD/ADHD.

Myself and others who work in mental health have done these threads before so you can look back through if you want. If you just want stimulants and you don’t have a childhood diagnosis to fall back on good luck.

I got diagnosed at 33 for the fist time. Psychiatrist. 40mg a day. Been on it for 3 years now. Changed my life, helped the general anxiety disorder and helps deal with the depression.

Also improved my insomnia. I take it about 90 min before bed and sleep better than I ever have.

I’m not saying it doesn’t exist. It is also the most vague and general diagnosis.

The first time I heard a friend say coffee calmed down her hyperactive son, I couldn’t believe it. She never struck me as a crazy person, but that was just, well, crazy. Then I saw the results. And then there was another, equally sane friend, whose diagnosed son also drank coffee. When I finally began learning about ADHD, I understood that stimulants have a calming effect on ADHD brains. (One doctor told me that people with ADHD who take cocaine calm down!)

And then there are the ADHD-PI (Primarily Inattentive) kids, who have a hard time getting their brains to turn on sometimes. In these cases, coffee works like coffee does for most adults.

This is where I tell the embarrassing parenting story about how I taught my son to drink coffee in high school, mixing it bit by bit with his morning cocoa, because he had to be at school by 8:30. But that was part of him becoming an adult and learning to use the delicious crutches that nature (and Starbucks) gives to those who need the stimulation of mainstream coffee culture.

In other words, you might want to think twice about giving up coffee for New Year’s — it might be just what you (or your child) needs.

Adderall made me feel awful. It made it hard for me to sleep. But then I was exhausted, so I needed Adderall to have any sort of energy. It didn’t do much for my concentration since I was so tired. I also clenched my jaw a lot on it.

I don’t have those symptoms with Vyvanse. It isn’t a miracle drug for me, but it helps a lot more than nothing, without any of the sleep issues. I don’t feel any sort of crash when it wears off, either.

Vyvanse is, in general, a much better drug than Adderall in multiple ways. Many people still can’t access it though as there is no generic and the company that holds its patent continues to search for ways to manipulate ways to extend it.

Probably. I think everyone suffers from lack of focus at times, and many have self-diagnosed it over the years. Then there were general practitioners prescribing adderall left and right without a proper diagnosis.

I know when I was tested for it, it was over several appointments with psychiatrists, and this was 1980ish. I'm not even sure they called it ADD at the time. I also never had the hyperactivity problem. Quite the opposite actually. I was content in elementary school to sit off by myself and daydream all day while starting out the window.

The issue with diagnosing ADHD is, simply speaking, it’s a melting pot of crossover symptoms and ailments from a collage of other psychiatry problems.

Well it has been a godsend for me personally, but I am a good mix of fricked-in-the-head , so maybe in combo with the anti depressant it does the trick

Hey man that’s great. I have no issues with stimulants I believe they’re actually underused medications and despite their C2 status have a lower addiction and withdrawal profile than their contemporaries namely Opioids and Benzodiazepines.

Find any psychiatrist who works within that space it will generally always distinguish if they will or won’t be willing to on their website.

Try alternatives other than meds
I’ve been on them too long, while they help the dependency is awful

If I miss a Vyvance I cannot sleep the following night when I take it

Benzodiazepines.

I weened myself off after 4-5 months of the Rx of Xanax. That shite scared me. I'd rather not sleep well and be a little nervous than on that evil.

I have adult Attention Deficit High Definition Television. I'm pretty pleased with Samsung. I added a sound bar and it really helps since the speakers are on the back of the television.

I have ADHD. I would advice that person to actually go get tested to see if they have ADHD. Having a hard time concentrating on their studies doesn't always mean they have ADHD.

If they are then they will be prescribed medication.I am not sure if they diaginos it the same today as they did when I was diagnosed in the early 90s, but I would suggest not going to your general doctor who might ask you to fill out a form that asks you some basic questions then give a prescription based on how you answer (which if you are looking for a prescription it is obvious how you have to answer).

In other words, what I am saying is.. Don't start taking any medication unless you truly have ADHD.
