Uhhh I would drop the comprehensive and add UM.

UM, unfortunately, in Louisiana is as important as any coverage you have.

We have a $5000 deductible on our collision just for a car that is new and like $2000 comprehensive and UM at 200/500 for economic damages and since we have health insurance I am not too worried about health claims. We only carry comprehensive because we still have one kid on the policy and expect her to fix her car so she would need comprehensive to pay for it.

Most people worry about deductibles when they should be worried about limits. Buy as much liability as you can and add an umbrella.

Drop all the emergency road coverage and rental car coverage and the like.

You can buy some kind of guarantee it won't go up after one accident that may be worth the money with a teenager. Ask the Geico 800 number.

The only auto claim we ever had was with one of our kids and it was a $12000 property loss and our premiums did not go up.

I feel your pain. Look on the bright side. You get a nice raise when he moves out and gets his own job. Just handed over all the bills (auto insurance, cel phone, etc) to our oldest child.

Buy a cheap car. Put him on that with only liability. My sons is only $85 a month. Farm Bureau.

Happens because teens can't handle driving overall yet.

My niece, no pics, totaled her car and a bricked mailbox before even getting out of her neighborhood (it was like 3 doors down) earlier this year. This was in the 1st 3 months of having her license.

Your kid is part of the same pool of funds as my niece, so thanks for helping to keep her insurance costs down!

However, mailboxes across the country live in constant fear as my niece can still afford to drive as a result of this sharing.

Go buy him a beater and make him secondary on it and keep him off the other vehicles, he just can not drive him which is probably a bonus.

Most companies don't allow you to exclude drivers in a household. Allstate won't allow us to do it. They figure no matter what they will be driving the car.

This is probably the best action. If they are listed primary on a car they figure they won't drive the other nicer family cars as much

Wait until he wrecks, it will QUADRUPLE.

ETA: Wife and I started with Geico, was the cheapest for the two of us. Added daughter, and it was actually cheaper to switch to Progressive. Then she wrecked, and they were both about the same except Progressive's price required 6 months at a time, Geico was the same price monthly. So back to Geico at $385/month now.

None of the suggestions worked for me, separate policy, only one car, limited coverage. Teenagers are expensive, even more so when then wreck.

I remember when I got my first car. 2003 Mitsu Eclipse. Mom made me get low deductibles. The insurance payment (435) was more than the car (318).

Depends on insurance company. Some companies have wised up to people listing their teenage kid as the driver on the old beater with liability only when the kid is really driving a different car most of the time. I know Progressive doesnt assign drivers to specific vehicles...every listed driver is rated equally on all vehicles on the policy.

Shop around. Some insurance companies are better than others with young drivers. Some companies would rather not insure teenagers at all, so they price themselves out of the market intentionally to avoid having the young drivers at all. I know AAA used to be fairly decent for young drivers, though its been a few years so I dont know how their rates are now
