That is high, I think. Does he have a 3.0 gpa or above? Has he had Drivers Training? There is no way adding him as an occassional driver should spike your rates that much. My son has been a primary on a vehicle since he turned 16..the highest rate ever was in the $260 per month range and we carry 100/300 limits. The company I work for offers significant discounts for the gpa and drivers training I asked about earlier. Maybe that will help if he has those things. I'd check around some. Good luck.

Shop around but you'll still get raped.
If you have a daughter just wait till she gets married.

Insurance is the reason I will never pay a note on a car. I avoid full coverage like the plague.

$270 for 2 adults sounds high to me, to start. We are paying $160 for a '16 4Runner and a '10 Odyssey.

Something seems terribly off with your figures. It might be a billing cycle issue where latent charges didn't get picked up for a while then they all hit for an installment.

What coverage do you have and what car does he drive?

Not always the wisest move. In many states, collision coverage fixes your car in an uninsured motorist situation which can be a lot broader than you probably think so even if you are a safe driver, you are leaving yourself with a huge exposure.

Buy him a classic car from the 60s or so. The cost of the car will be offset by the savings in the insurance.

In most cases yes BUT if the parents have shitty credit and a shitty driving record, you would be surprised...the kid can get the lower rate.

His insurance would cost $664 per month? That's beyond outrageous.

Shop around.

I am adding my 21 year old step son to my policy as a secondary and it is like $65 increase a month but I think I got discounts for him being in college and good grades plus he is 21

I think it will be around $120 to add my 16 year old son in November

Sounds about right...unfortunately it runs a good bit more but the insurance carrier is biting off a huge risk based off lack of experience if nothing else.

I just did this for my son. I bought him an old 93 Jeep Wrangler and made him the primary driver of that, so we don't have to pay full coverage. My insurance went up $100 per month. Got discounts for good grades and drivers ed. My insurance is through USAA.

This makes me happy. I thought I was about to get arse raped in January with my 16 yr old son driving, and I have USAA.

Then he doesn't need to be on your insurance. No point in paying insane premiums until it is necessary for him to drive.

Try Geico but yeah bend over. They know he will likely get in a significant wreck.

I switched to Geico when our son started driving. My previous company did pretty much the same to me as yours did to you. Geico gave me better coverage and only added about $50 per month for the teenager and his car. I couldn't believe it.
