Damn right they are. If a mall needs to be shot up, little Markel is Johnny on the spot

BATON ROUGE — A program meant to prevent violence in Baton Rouge is now on hold following city-parish budget cuts, and questions are growing about what its loss could mean for the community.
The Baton Rouge Community Street Team, once involving Markel Lee, who is now accused in the Mall of Louisiana shooting, is no longer active under the Edwards administration following cuts tied to Mayor-President Sid Edwards’ budget reductions.
The program was designed to connect high-risk residents with resources, including jobs, housing assistance and counseling, with the goal of reducing violence through early intervention.
Advocates say the focus should be on prevention, not just responding after a crime occurs.
“We should speak to the data. The data shows that these programs work,” Michael McClanahan said.

it gets better

McClanahan warned that failing to fund prevention programs could have long-term consequences. “If you don't fund programs for young people, you give them something to do, you give them structure, to expand their horizon...they'll be raping, robbing, killing you 10, 15 years down the road,” he said.

If they are going to be raping and killing you, I have a feeling that various programs aren’t going to fix that:

Why do they need programs like this to learn how to live civilized amongst civilized people?
Me, nor any of my friends needed these programs, and we aren't out here raping, robbing, and killing. Along with a lot of other kids that are currently growing up in the neighborhood i grew up in.
Whats the difference?

So the grandmother is a member of the New Black Panther Party? You can't make this stuff up

The guys dealing always have huge wads of cash on them, the guy who goes to an okay job is struggling and seen working way to hard.
That's what they see daily, and what they inspire to be. They can barely read or write, and have no adults remotely parenting them. Every second of every day is about perceived power, and a respect hierarchy that makes no sense. If they feel remotely "disrespected" it is met with extreme force. Then retaliation happens that lasts for years. Anyone loosely attached to someone gets involved. One simple strong sentence can turn into 8 people dying over the coarse of a few years.

How much money has been dumped into “programs for young people”?
It has gotten us nowhere.
The only way this ends is if the criminals’ shite parents and shite communities start holding them accountable, like the rest of civilized society.

Big Daddy Gov needs to end. No programs.

Translation: If you don't fund these "programs" that we, in turn take 95% of those taxpayer dollars for personal enrichment, then 10-15 years down the road, the same outcomes will happen regardless of the funding, except i won't be as rich."
I wouldn't be surprised if McClanahan is corrupt as the day is long and is likely involved in some sort of kickback fraud scheme. Just like literally every leftist "program" that requires more tax dollars in order for it to work. How much more? Doesn't matter, just MORE of YOUR hard earned dollars will solve a problem that they create.

Sid Edwards took office in January 2025. In May 2025, Markel Lee was already in Juvenile Detention.

Apparently Sid is a Time Lord who retroactively defunded the program before Lee ended up behind bars.

on another note when has it become legal for 17 year olds to own a vehicle in LA?
"Police said camera footage outside the mall showed the guy getting into a white Honda Accord with damage to the front bumper. Investigators said they were able to use a license plate reader to identify the car and find the owner.
Detectives located the owner, who they said identified the suspected shooter as Markel Lee."
It doesn’t say Lee owns the car, it says the owner of the car identified Lee.

The panel named Courtney Scott in nine counts and also brought eight charges against Veronica Mathis, whose company provided assistance to Broome's "Safe Hopeful Healthy Baton Rouge" program. Scott oversaw Broome's "Healthy City" initiative, which benefited from the use of federal COVID-19 relief funds.

Scott and Mathis each face allegations including conspiracy, theft, bribery, money laundering and public contract fraud, while Scott is also accused of malfeasance as a government employee.

The Safe Hopeful Healthy Baton Rouge initiative was behind Broome's "Summer of Hope" events in 2024. The program was intended to reduce violence in the city. The Advocate newspaper reported Wednesday that Mathis’ company received city-parish funds totaling more than $50,000 between 2020 and 2024.

Another 13 murders occurred in the 70807 ZIP code. Combined, these areas accounted for over 60% of murders in East Baton Rouge Parish over the past two years.
40 zip codes in the parish, and 60% of murders come from 5 of them.

But wait there’s more…
Markel Lee mentioned in NYT article
Under indictment
Quite the mentor, I guess.
A rapper mentor…just what these kids need.
Moms was trying to help I guess
Hmm maybe not the best mentor after all.

Baton Rouge became the first city outside New Jersey to be tutored in the Newark method. The mayor’s office started an effort to mimic Newark’s public safety ecosystem, overseen by Courtney Scott, then a mayoral aide.
Under indictment
quote:
The team’s high-risk interventionists are the first responders to shooting scenes and heated disputes
quote:
One of the group’s elders is Gerald Haynes, 51, whom everyone calls Face for the jagged scar that runs from his left ear to his throat. Mr. Haynes spent 27 years in prison for his role in a drive-by shooting, an attempt at retribution for the killing of a friend.
Quite the mentor, I guess.
quote:
Khoury Brown, 32, another high-risk interventionist, is best known to many of the young people the street team works with as the rapper Geaux Yella, with 129,000 Instagram followers. His skill with words is central to his job, but sometimes when a fight is brewing, he fears words will fail him.
A rapper mentor…just what these kids need.
quote:
One of the street team’s initiatives is a mentorship program, in which young people at risk of violence are paired with mentors like Darius Crockett. Mr. Crockett had drifted to the streets as a teenager in Baton Rouge, selling drugs. But he had since gotten his G.E.D. and found work as a welder. He was assigned to work with a 15-year-old named Markel.
quote:
Shootings happen frequently on Markel’s street. His mother, Kayla Atkins, uses a wheelchair, having been paralyzed by a gunshot long ago. From a young age, Markel had to be a caregiver. As he entered his teens, he was getting into fights. When he was 14, one of his best friends was shot and killed. His mother said she desperately wanted to save her son “from going down that path.”
quote:
The mentorship program required Markel to complete three goals. Knowing Markel wanted to rap, Mr. Crockett urged him to enter a talent contest, where he performed an original rap song. Markel took first place, which meant he not only accomplished his first goal, but won prizes that would satisfy his other two: He would be a featured performer in a video with Geaux Yella himself and participate in a recording session. Markel eagerly looked forward to the coming winter when the session would happen. Mr. Crockett also helped the boy land a job at a city-run summer camp.
quote:
Then, in June, Markel got into an argument with his sister. He had a “meltdown,” slamming doors and throwing things, Ms. Atkins said. Feeling helpless to control him, she called the police — and Mr. Crockett. The police officer put Markel in handcuffs in the back of his cruiser.
Moms was trying to help I guess
quote:
As 2023 came to a close, the street team faced new troubles. In early December, Mr. Crockett, the street team member who had mentored Markel, was charged with aggravated battery, domestic abuse and child endangerment. His girlfriend told the police that he had slammed her head against a wall and thrown a steam iron at her while children were sleeping in the next room.
Hmm maybe not the best mentor after all.
