The issue for me is how do we make ourselves safe from anybody.
Your point isn't stupid, but there is a difference between some mentally distressed guy trying to kill his wife and maybe take out a couple other people in a fit of rage, and a person who thinks its his duty to murder as many innocents as he can and works strategically to increase the body count.

Im sure this WalMart has a sporting goods dept. Just go unchain one of those Smith and Wesson AR-15s in the display case, load up a few .223s, end problem.

Because ISIS espouses an ideal. It's an ideal that appeals to the ostracized people in our society, and it gives them what they always wanted: purpose.
It is an important difference.

If they're anything like our local Walmart they'll have the guns but won't have any ammo for them.
