Accidentally brought kids to an adult party

We had a neighbor invite us to a party tonight. The street we live on is relatively close, meaning lots of get together, lots of kids, etc. they have had this party for several years and we never got to go before. I say this because we had a misunderstanding: we brought kids, and it was pretty clearly not a party for kids (which we realized upon arriving). At not time did anyone tell us it wasn’t for kids/families, and we knew about half the people there.
Our kids are 2 and 4.
They have a pool in the backyard that is quite deep, and has no kiddie area. We’d been told to bring our swimsuits because while it wasn’t explicitly a pool party, it was noted that it was available. For the reason of the pool, letting the kids just run amok while we socialized wasn’t an option.
So we stayed about an hour. Everyone was very polite, but it was really awkward. We had brought a dip and alcohol, which we left there. We left the party about as quickly as we could and still be polite.
My point: should we have stayed? I feel bad because we did eat the food (the kids were starving and we had planned to eat there) but I feel also that it was impolite to just eat and basically leave.

You probably should have left soon after realizing no kids were allowed.

Send your kids home to the sitter and put your keys in the fish bowl.

Mistakes were made. Either you should have asked, or the hosts or some other guest you know could have thought to mention it, assuming they knew about your kids and family. You played it about as well as you could. Oh well. I wouldn't sweat it too much. Maybe mention it and apologize in a light hearted sort of way with the host the next time you see them, and they will do the same. It probably isn't something that anyone besides you and your wife are thinking about too much.

Should have just walked back to your house and locked your kids in the backyard, then went back to the party and got hammered drunk. They would have been fine.

You played that right. If the kids weren’t a problem they would have said let them get in the pool. Leaving The alcohol was the right move as well. Made the same mistake myself and did the exact same thing.

Smart. Anytime I drink I want a dip also.

Hell no. Thankfully, you are decent enough to realize it was an adult party, stayed 1 hour (the perfect amount of time) and left. I wish there were more people like you.

its an idiotic idiom anyways

The lack of communication by a large chunk of our society cracks me up. At least you didn’t let your kids run around like assholes for a few hours.

I should say that they weren’t explicitly banned. Someone else fought an infant, and there were a handful of teenagers there.
Just none close to our kids’ age.
We considered that, but a few of our friends there (including the hosts) started chatting us up as soon as we arrived.
