I have a R22 unit as well. Better to replace it cause R22 prices are over the moon (I think he quoted like $100 a pound).

Well they've replaced the newer freon than r22 also so I would say you did well. Goes into effect in January.
An AC guy told me this new stuff is going to be a disaster. It’s explosive past a certain temperature. The regulations’ penalties are Draconian. I’m not remembering all he showed me. Maybe an AC contractor can elaborate.

Not gonna lie I’m shocked to hear that. Unless it’s the bullshite “assembled in the USA with global materials”
i am sure they source materials from everywhere

Yeah the capacitors are cheap. I've done a little work with a relative of mine to help him out sometimes and I've billed people $150 for the service and capacitor. Made me feel a little guilty at times. Especially billing old people

They make an alternative to R22, I think it is a tan bottle. I have the same issue at my Mom's. I got a 30lb jug a few years back.

I just happen to have a jug of R-22 if you're interested.

Didn’t you move to the mountains 2 years ago? Also you told us you’re looking to buy a house and are renting a townhouse. Why is the AC unit a renter’s responsibility?

You can get compatible freon. I had a leak and kept adding for years. 507 I think.
Thigh I can but r22 as well. Look on Amazon and ebay.

Have your AC guy buy you a drum of 427A. Dumps right on top of 22 and ain’t gotta change shite. There are loop holes around everything, even our silly arse gubmint.

Damn, it's almost old enough to apply for its AARP card.

Frick the EPA, the Federal Government, radical environmentalists, politicians who allow this, and dumbasses who buy into the whole "climate change emergency" crap.

since the new, replacement gases have a 2L flammability rating, you cannot retro older units to receive the new refrigerant since the UL rating on the equipment was tested for a 2L gas.
Does this mean you would have to have new piping from the outside unit to the inside (if you have a split system). I have a brick house but on a crawlspace so I could run new copper.
But someone with a slab would be screwed.

$1600-$1800 is what it cost's an EPA certified tech to purchase a 30 lb jug of recycled R-22. Roughly $55 a pound. They'll likely charge you $200-$300 a pound to charge your unit.
I've got probably 20 pounds in a bottle I've had for years and it's not recycled. It's sitting in my garage.
