I mean, it had a good run.
The next one will be lucky to make it a quarter of that time.

Get some more R22. It might take 50 more years before it leaks out.

Some places may or may not have some reclaimed stuff that they can’t sell.
They may or may not top you off for the summer if you make a deal with them for the eventual replacement or pay for a fancy service visit.
Allegedly

If you get a replacement do not buy a Goodman or Amana. POS units. Capacitors go out on them constantly

Mr internet says you can get a 30lb drum for $900.

I think you can replace R22 with R407C. That's what we at our shop if memory serves me.

Just buy a new system. It is cheaper

Phased out jan 1, 2020. Someone had 55 weeks to unfrick that situation, and didn't.

Well they've replaced the newer freon than r22 also so I would say you did well. Goes into effect in January.
Don't tell me... it's under even higher pressure, causing stuff to fail even faster?

Yep just have to change the piston in the A coil

The other option is replace the entire unit. Currently we have a carrier that’s 50 years old, made in the USA, and hasn’t given us any trouble in literally years.
Ok, for starters, your unit has lasted decades longer than can reasonably be expected, so stop bitching.
Secondly, R-22 was phased out 14 years ago.

Our aystem was sold to my parents by Sears Roebuck & Co 57 years ago.
I know for certain that it hasn't been serviced for at least six to ten years. It is now low of R22 and Cousin Eddie says that he can pump it down and replace the freon with Propane and gain a lot of eficiency. Thoughts anyone?

My unit is 20 years old & needed r22 refill last summer. I found someone that filled it for a little less than $400. Got me thru last summer.

I have an R22 unit that has a slow leak. Have had to charge it once a year for the past several years and it lasts all the way to the following summer. First couple years it needed 2-3 pounds. Last year was 5 lbs and the price of the R22 has started zooming up. I'm trying to decide if I want to keep charging it once a year or just bite the bullet and move to replace. It just hit its annual failure to maintain temp so I know it's time to recharge.
The system runs flawlessly when charged so hesitant to replace it but the cost of refilling the R22 is now north of $500 a year.

A capacitor is only $15 though. My AC guy is suggesting Goodman because the parts are cheaper and easier to get. Every brand seems like arse. Hopefully I still have a few more years until I have to replace.

Last weekend I was charged 380 for two lbs
