AC going out. Air not blowing cool. First-in search for a reasonable priced company. Second—will hurt to just run the fan till I get someone out here. Live in Prairieville

Is the outside fan running? If not put a box fan on top of it till you get somewhere over there to fix it.

Not if you turn the thermostat to fan. Do not run it with the thermostat set to cool. The only thing it will really do is even the temp out across the house or zone which could help if you have bedrooms that are much hotter than the rest of the house.

Dirty coil, broken fan, bad compressor, broken relay, low refrigerant, bad thermostat. Anything could be wrong. If you don’t know your system call someone, but know they are about to put 7lbs in your system and swap a bunch of parts for no reason and charge you $700

Is your outside condenser running? If not then you more than likely have a bad capacitor.

He better hope it isn't R12 or it will likely be well over $700.

Especially if it is an R12 system if they do need to replace a lot of refrigerant I would have the put leak detector in because if you just lose that refrigerant they will have to recharge it again to find the leak.

Ok.
First step. Let's see if you can fix it for free.

Is your thermostat on? Turn AC on to setting for it to come on.
Have someone next to outside unit to listen to noise. (If any)

If it's totally silent. First check breaker. Second check the condensation overflow switch.
Should be the wires sticking out of the only pvc pipe you see coming from your machine. Remove that switch by pulling up. If water is present and backed up then you just have a clogged condensate line. This us a very common issue.

Now. If the outside unit clicks, hums then clicks off you need a new capacitor. This is a less than $10 part retail at any appliance store.

If the outside unit clicks and then you hear electrical arcing or buzzing you need a contactor which is also an inexpensive part.

Now if the compressor comes on and the fan just hums then everything shuts off you need a new fan.

Lastly it could be low on freon. This is also common and the compressor will not run off its too low or it will run and ice up on the inside. You need a tech for that.

DO. NOT!!! LET an AC tech tell you you have to upgrade your system due to old freon. They make a substitute refrigerant. This is a huge lie some techs are pushing to make big install money.

If the condenser fan is running put your hand over the fan and see if you feel any heat if not then the compressor isn’t running, could be as simple as a capacitor. If you do feel heat then feel the suction line the bigger of the two copper lines, is it cold?

Had a local guy(Lafayette) come out and stayed for 3 hours. Changed thermostat, capacitor and cleaned the unit. Cost $350.

Water filling the drip pan causing the float switch to keep the outside unit off. It’s a stab in the dark with so little info but it’s free to check!
