Absurd quotes from car places

My wife just went to get an inspection for her registration and got failed because of the middle brake light being out.
The part was a $6 bulb.
And the labor was $80.
For a single bulb replacement.
Thankfully she called and I said I could change it for a couple bucks, but I couldn’t help but be amused at the price that was quoted. Who the frick pays that?

If she’s your wife why not just do it for free?

Probably a .5-1 hour minimum labor charge

I love when they charge like $50 to change windshield wipers. They take maybe 30 seconds to change with zero tools.

I didn’t mean I’d charge her, I meant it would only cost me a couple bucks to buy the bulb.

And you can get much higher quality ones for $32ish total.

I pay 15 dollars to have a single keyless battery changed on my key ring at the Honda place.
i just found out I can buy 5 of those batterys at walmart for under 10 bucks and do it myself.

You’d be surprised at the level of bullshiterequired to do simple basic shite on modern cars.

This. They probably could have been a little more forward with that info, but you're paying for their overhead. This is the kind of thing I just file away under "won't be back".

I'm pretty sure the workers at O'reilly's would have changed it for her.

They bill for their time. Why does this confuse you?

Had a dealership offer me a battery service for $75. I asked what is that? Service manager stated they would clean the terminals and spray them with battery terminal corrosion inhibitor/protectant. I refused and cleaned the terminals myself. A can of protectant cost me $5.

Probably takes them 15-30 minutes to change and it's probably a minimum of 1 hour labor charge. I'm not seeing the problem here really. Something like wipers, yes that's ridiculous, but changing that bulb is actual labor.
All of that said, I'd do like you and just do it myself.

To be fair, some of that extra cost goes into paying for overhead you don't have to worry about, such as:
Maintaining any extra equipment they use (whether they use it for your job or not)
Rent on the property they are using
Paying for insurance and taxes on the labor
The cost of standing by the repair if the first attempt doesn't work
The cable TV they have blaring in the waiting room
etc.
Not saying it's worth $86, just saying more goes into it than a couple of bucks for a bulb and free labor on your part.
