A Year in Hotels - Tipping the Housekeepers

It’s been a long year. From March of last year until today. I’ll be checking out at 12:00 PM and heading to Galveston for some much needed relaxation therapy. 30 days and then back on the road for another year of hotels. Here are a few of the hotels I stayed in.
There are a handful of others that had pencils or no pen at all. Mostly no name do-drop-ins most wouldn’t consider sleeping in.
I tipped $5.00 dollars everytime I used housekeeping. $10.00 dollars at the Four Seasons. Woodspring Suites didn’t have regular housekeeping. They made people exchange their own linens. They got tipped $2.00, $3.00 dollars when they came to the room to vaccuum and dust.
At one hotel in Colorado, one of the housekeepers stole the tip from the actual housekeeper who would have cleaned the room that day. She knew I left tips and would sneak in before the real housekeeper for the floor showed up. I'm pretty sure this happened more than once at other hotels.
When I check out, I leave the tip inside the microwave or the refridgerator. The linen crew will take the money if you don’t.
Do you tip housekeeping? If so, how much?

Hmm, I wouldn't have thought of that. That's a good idea.

Never when in a hotel for a weekend or work. $5-$10/day at resorts.

I applaud your persistence in whatever field it is that you are in. However, that lifestyle would flat out wear me out.

Staying in hotels for a year at a time sounds miserable

I don't think I've ever tipped the housekeepers.

Are you staying in a hotel in Galveston?

You stay in a Four Seasons and Days Inn? Quite the range - from the 1% to meth addicts.

They make minimum wage or more. No tip from me.

I typically don’t tip people whose wage or salary isnt determined based on tips, i.e ones that make less than minimum wage.

So you're staying in a hotel the entire month, every month? Jesus, you can probably have the highest status on every major chain. Either way, that sounds rough. I hope you are single.

Yeah, I enjoy staying in hotels for work just for a change of pace. Usually much closer to the office I'll be working out of and just get some good sleep. But after a week, I'm ready to get out. I'd lose my mind for a whole year.
And I'll tip if I make a mess. But I typically keep the room pretty neat and often don't get service unless I need new towels. If they are just doing a normal change of sheets and stuff, I don't really leave anything.

Most of the time I tip $3-$5/day each day of stay just depending on how much cash I have / how good a job they are doing. Hardest job in the hotel industry and the "experienced" ones make about $10-$15/an hour at the average hotel (depending on part of the country you are in). A lot make about minimum wage.

What do you do that requires you to stay in hotels for an entire year straight?
Posted on 3/19/18 at 9:49 am to inmybasement
You’re doing it wrong. Pick a chain and stick with it.

Just think of all the people that check in to hotels and find $5 in the fridge or microwave because they weren't checked or cleaned after each use.
