It’s people who buy from him who are also responsible. I’m guilty of it for convenience and lower price.

Malik's in the early 80s were awesome. Miss those times

Turn them into indoor driving ranges. All those ricochets would be cool.
Or maybe indoor soccer on an unusually shaped field.

Exception to every rule.
Lakeside still has location going for it. And really, no other real competition for the stores it has

Do you think no one got hurt in the rise of the mega shopping malls?

It’s sales are still declining. Malls are done until the mall owners realize they are not the top of the shopping food chain anymore. Landlords still want tenants to pay hundreds of dollars per sq foot per year even though they know damn well traffic counts have plummeted for years. This has led to the smaller tenants like myself having to increase prices to help meet our rent obligations. Occcupancy costs that use to run 10-12% are now around 25%. Also the quality of the shopper has dropped. When sales spike first of month and then drop 50% just a few years ago in February because tax returns are delayed past Valentine’s Day, the customer base does not have the disposable income they once had. Traditional malls will be all but gone in less than a decade, including lakeside.

Mom would drop me off around 11am on a Saturday with my buddy. Hit up lunch and either orange Julius or cookie company for dessert
Hit up Structure, Chess King, Gadzooks, Spencers, and look for a tape or CD at Sam Goodys or CD world
Maybe get a number or two along the way

One of the best ideas I heard, was turn them into court-houses. You typically have 1-3 big department stores that could house the court(s). Then all the smaller shops and other buildings could be rented out as law offices. Plenty of parking, and all the lawyers could walk to court.
Also restaurants could occupy the food courts and everyone would be winners.

Met my wife at the mall. Saw her working there and then went back another day to get the digits, similar to the kid in the second video
It’s funny how the indoor malls are dying and the outdoor “window shopping” malls are making a comeback, which was why the indoor mall was created in the first place... one of the reasons being to promote human interaction.
It’s probably technologies fault for the decline. The less desire to interact with people face to face, ability to shop from your couch, etc. It’s really quite sad, and wish my kids could experience just going out and hanging out at the mall. Where is there for kids to just hang out these days?

I believe the Dallas Galleria is going that route. They have 3 office towers attached to the mall. The south end of the mall is or was Old Navy, Gap and Banana Republic. At least a few months ago there was talk they were going to relocate those stores and make them apartments. The lack of windows in the buildings make it not a very appealing environment to live.

Sounds a good idea to me to

Many cities can successfully support 1 mall. It is the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th malls that suffer.

Main St stores.
In a growing capitalist economy this is what happens. New ideas of convenience and ways to lower prices/increase service cause old ways to become obsolete. Ultimately it’s good for everyone. Sure you feel bad for the main st. Business owner or the mall store manager who loses their job. But again Amazon has 10s of thousands of employees.
In some time in the future Amazon will become obsolete to some new innovative idea

Indoor malls are failing because of the degenerates who hang out in the common areas all day and run of paying customers.
The open air malls are working because people who stop will still go there. The degenerates who will spend little if anything aren’t going to loiter all day out in the heat or cold.
