This exact thing happened to me one time when I was working a delivery job in high school.
Cruising through a neighborhood in my work truck with no AC and the windows down. I'm stopped at a stop sign with a map in my lap trying to figure out where the hell I was supposed to be an hour ago. I spot a pit bull, and he spots me. Immediately bursts into a full sprint straight at the truck. I had no time to react and he leaps dead stride into the driver side window (open).
I immediately panic and go into defense mode. Fist in front of my face to protect the money maker of course, which he did put his jaws around leading to further pants shitting. Thankfully he was playing, which I unfortunately didn't realize in my panic. I punched/Pushed him in the ribs with my free hand and heaved him back out the window.
At that point he turned and gave me a "what the hell was that for?" look. I calmed down and called him over and he stood up on his hind legs and let me pet him through the window. Then a guy working down the street called over to him and he bolted for his almost identical white work truck and jumped in the window. Case of mistaken identity.
I did not know how to feel after. Felt shitty for punching and tossing a seemingly sweet dog. But damn those things are scary.
