A Story About Crows & Friendship (Long Read)

I wanted to share my experience with a family of American Crows in my neighborhood. I hope you enjoy it.
About six months ago, I noticed some loud birds outside. When I went to investigate, I saw a few Crows attacking a Blue Jay nest in a cypress tree. I'd been watching the Blue Jays from inside for a while. I've always enjoyed bird identification and watching.
As if by instinct, I clapped loudly a few times to scare off the Crows. Well, little did I know, Crows remember faces and hold grudges against perceived threats.
Almost immediately after that incident, the family of Crows were waiting for me almost everytime I stepped outside. They would caw at me incessantly and even dive bomb towards me from the air.
I knew Crows were intelligent, but their stalking made me research more. Apparently, Crows have the intelligence of a seven year old human or a chimp according to researchers - this blew my mind. I needed to find a way to make up for threatening the Crows.
There was an article that suggested feeding the Crows. I went to HEB and bought raw peanuts, a Crow favorite, apparently, and started putting them outside for the Crows as a peace offering.
Well, as it turns out, Crows really like peanuts. Ever since that day, the Crows have not only ceased to dive bomb at me, but they now greet me when I step outside with a much softer caw.
Like clockwork, they've learned the exact time of day to visit for peanuts. They hangout outside without being aggresive, and I like to think I am now friends with this little family of Crows.
Indeed, they follow me to the nearby stores and relatives' / friends' homes within about a mile from my residence. They greet me when I arrive home after being away for longer periods. When I walk by the window, they greet me. They're watching always, it seems.
Anyways, I hope you enjoyed my story.
TL;DR - I pissed off some crows but now we're cool because I bribed them with peanuts.

Crows are great. My grandpa was a badass back in the day and would climb trees to snag a fledgling or two while being swarmed by adult crows.
He always had pet crows and they were very smart and fun. He lived in a subdivision in the country and it would fly into people's cars if the windows were down and snag cigarettes or other bullshite and take it to its nest. It liked the shiny foil in cigarette packs.

Crows are some of the best birds to have around if you like other birds and birdwatching. They'll alert to hawks and other predatory threats usually before any other bird. Next time you hear them getting loud, go out and investigate. There is a guarantee that a hawk or cat is passing through, or maybe a snake.
Crows can be nest robbers, but so can Blue Jays. You interrupted a gang turf war.
I have a murder of crows across the road from me. They've been there for several years now, and grow with every generation. They're fun to have around.

I have had a similar experience with Magpies, which are related to crows. It is pretty cool how comfortable they get around you.

“That’s probably for the best, because crow communities can hold a grudge for generations. A team of researchers at the University of Washington ran an experiment where they captured American Crows in nets while wearing a caveman mask, then released them back onto campus. When the researchers later walked across campus wearing the same mask, the crows scolded and dive-bombed them. More than 10 years after capturing just seven crows, more than half of the crows on campus still raised the alarm at the sight of a caveman mask.“

Great story. I went down a crow / Dick Cheney mask rabbit hole a couple of weeks ago and want to make friends with some crows. Ts crazy that they play with blocks and can put them in the correct order and do tasks that small child can’t do. I rarely hear or see them here. But somehow some way that’s on my to do list for this Summer.
