PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Food and grocery delivery apps have made social distancing easier but some delivery workers in Portland say they’re being scammed by app users.

Annaliisa Arambula is a personal shopper for the Instacart app. She told KOIN 6 News she spends up to 60 hours a week delivering groceries.

Like most delivery apps, Instacart pays for a personal shopper’s mileage but Arambula said they rely mostly on tips.

So a couple of weeks ago when a customer needed groceries from a store near Arambula’s house and offered a sizable tip of $55—she quickly accepted the job. “There was really no issues,” Arambula said of the request. “It was a shopper’s dream: everything was in stock, everything they wanted was there in the quantities and the sizes they wanted.” But the job was truly too good to be true.

Shortly after dropping off the groceries, Arambula checked the app and her entire tip was gone, with a message explaining the “customer modified the tip post-delivery.” “It was just like a punch to the gut,” she recalled. “It was really baffling to me that somebody could do that, especially knowing the climate we were entering into and the risk because so much was unknown about the virus at that point, too.”

Arambula is the breadwinner in her home. Her husband has health issues that prevent him from working—which means she has to be extra careful when she returns home from work.

That is pretty shitty. The app shouldn't let you change your tip.

Or limit it to a certain percentage you can change. I get The idea is to be able to lower a tip when your shits all fricked up.

Yea, I mean I get it if there’s shitty service and half your shite is missing or damaged after a delivery.

But save the option for after the delivery, not before

Why not? Doordash allows it. The app requires you enter a tip before they do anything; what if they frick your order up and you tipped them a gazillion dollars? They get a windfall

What are you trying to say here? The customer did change it after the delivery

Maybe the customer meant to put $5 and realized later when fishing the process after delivery. I don’t see how this is a story worth giving a shite

Pretty shitty move by the customer.

I don’t think the workers should be able to see the tip beforehand

What stupid shite app makes you pre-tip?

The top correlated to the quality of service. There is no way I’m saying what I will tip until the service is fully delivered.

She’s not really an employee, so they’re not really her employer.

As an "Instacart" worker? How much does that pay? Can one be a "breadwinner" of the family on that amount?

As in he can't do ANYTHING to earn a wage? Nothing? I have a friend who has significant cognitive disabilities (similar to Down's syndrome), but he still manages to work multiple (albeit low skilled jobs) to earn a weekly wage to help support himself.

The article should have been tilted:

"Loser embellishes story in effort to generate a GoFundMe drive to supplement her and her husband's lifestyles as losers"
