So are you okay with me sending you an invoice for quoting you a job?

Herein lies the problem.

This, too.

You can't get work done many times without either, due to IT departments blocking emails, necessary company software, unless it's on company owned devices.
Therefore, they tie you to their own stuff, then it forces you to keep up with these, then they expect you to answer calls on off days, late nights, etc.

If you are a salary employee then negotiate a higher salary if you feel you aren’t being compensated enough for your work at home. If you’re an hourly employee then log the time you work at home. If the company you work for refuses to meet what you consider acceptable compensation then get a new job.

If it doesn’t work, then you aren’t worth more than what you’re already being paid.

i fully support this idea, not the "illegal" part, but make it part of federal labor laws that its mandatory to have to "fully" compensate people any time you require them to do work related stuff

if you are "forced" to check and/or respond to emails after hours then you should be getting paid 24 hrs a day or getting extra compensation for that since you are "on call"

I like this law. Just expand it to prevent ALL employees from conducting ANY personal business of ANY kind while at the job.

No calls from the school about your kids.
No looking up airfare rates online for your vacation.
No personal cell phones of any kind at work. Must lock them up at the door.
No running 15-30 mins over your lunch break.
No sitting around discussing football or making March madness brackets.
No holiday parties on company time.
No running errands for your entire lunch and then bringing food into the office and eating food “on the clock”.

Just when I think you lazy workers can’t get any lazier - you go and try to introduce a bill to prevent the office from getting 3 mins of work out of you in the afternoon when you already wasted hours of company time earlier in the day.

We need laws for this sort of thing?

No, because if you are hourly I seriously doubt your employer is providing you with a phone. I had this issue come up once. Boss called me about something and I didn't answer, he then texted and I didn't respond. When asked about it the next day I told him straight up. Look if it is on the way home and I am driving that is one thing. But when you call about a work issue on my time at home that is a no go. Now if you want to compensate me or give me a work phone we can discuss it otherwise don't call.

I agree with all of this. Excluding family emergencies of course.

Boss was middle management. He tried to make it a issue. I brought it to a higher level and boss was corrected quickly and told he couldn't be making demands of hourly employees off the clock. In fact it is a direct violation of company policy.

Doesn't the average 40 hour weekly worker only actually work like 20 hours? frick them for crying about a few emails after hours when they're really spending half their time at work on reddit or something.

I was just kidding. If I was hourly I wouldn’t give much of a shite after hours about company issues

Yep. It’s not the boss it’s the clients, if you are in sales you better take care of them even if it’s past 5 or they’ll look for someone who can. Dumb law.
