A new bill would make it illegal to contact employees after work

After-hours work emails can be stressful to deal with.
The old saying is, "don't take your work home with you." But the new reality for many people is that work follows you home in the form of emails, text messages, and social media.
New York City Council member Rafael Espinal Jr. has introduced a bill which would make it illegal for businesses to require that employees check their email or other electronic communication during non-work hours.
If an employer breaks the rule, they'd be fined $250 and required to pay an additional $500 to their employee.
The "Disconnecting From Work" bill also includes days in which an employee is out on vacation, sick days, or personal days off.
"There's a lot of New Yorkers out there that don't know when their work day begins or when their work day ends, because we're all so tied to our phones," Espinal said.
"You can still work, you can still talk to your boss, but this just is saying that, when you feel like you've hit your boiling point and you can't do it anymore, you're able to disconnect and decompress for a while."
France passed a similar law and other countries are following their lead.LINK

That sounds like a smart idea in the financial capital of North America

I’ll read the rest of this thread after I answer this email from my boss.

They'll follow the rules, if they do not want to get shite done.

unless you just have a dickhead boss i'd imagine 9/10 times it is clients keeping you busy after-hours or you are not taking care of your shite 8-5.

How about we let employers and employees work this out
Posted on 3/31/18 at 10:12 pm to BowDownToLSU
LOL, good luck enforcing that shite.
Bob always comes to work prepared.
Tyus always has to catch up on e-mails before he can be helpful.
I wonder who gets promoted?

When they outlaw cell phones (i.e., facebook, tigerdroppings, etc) AT work, they should pass this law.

While it might sound good in theory, do we really need a law on this?

What about people that are on call after hours?

If you're an important piece of a sales or operations team you absolutely want to know about developments when you're away from work.

As someone who gets a lot of emails after hours, I think this bill is idiotic.
I either answer them or I don’t. And if I don’t and I’m questioned why, I say I was either asleep or busy, neither of which are fireable offenses.
For the record, I always answer time sensitive emails, but random stuff that can wait until tomorrow does just that. It waits until tomorrow.

Won’t be long till liberals will want to take it a step further making it illegal even if you want to keep working.

Something like this could only be applicable to hourly employees

Most of reddit thought that the person who did answer the emails after hours or worked late was an a-hole for making everyone else look bad. They said it disrupted workplace camaraderie because of "that person".
That person shouldn't work harder than other people bc it's not fair that they have lives after hours.
Tough shite. That person might have a life too, but maybe they want to be recognized as a hard worker to provide a better life for their family while you ignore emails to have drinks at the bar.
