Didn’t she wait a long time to make a report?

He walked around shopping for more than 10 minutes if I remember correctly.

It seems to me, anyone would call 911 immediately if they suspect someone of grabbing their child with intent to kidnap it.

It seems to me he would have got the frick out of there if he did what is accused.

But who knows.

Well, Patel went down to Georgia
He had a headache he was trying to deal
Now he’s in a bind, lady with fat behind
Claimed it was her child he was to steal

Had Mr Patel stayed in India, he'd not had this issue.

I just watched the video again. He definitely looks like he leans in and grabs the kid. He admits he grabbed the kid in the police report. I don't buy the kid was falling nonsense. Predators look for perceived weak prey (lady in motorized scooter) he sought her out for some BS (can't find Tylenol) and made his move. Guilty,

The standard here is not just guilty, but guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. While I don't 100% believe his story, I also think that these is plenty of doubt in what the prosecution can prove. I mean just read this thread and all of the debate here within. The defense is gong to have a field day with this one.

I get your point, but going from that to this type of kidnapping is quite the escalation.

Mahendra Patel has pleaded guilty to conspiring with former Atlanta Public Schools (APS) Chief Information Officer (CIO) Jerome Oberlton to receive kickbacks in exchange for Oberlton using his influence at APS to award a $780,000 computer project to the firm.

“Patel subverted the fairness of the contracting process for his own benefit, and ultimately undermined the trust taxpayers place in APS to provide high-quality educational services,” said United States Attorney Sally Quillian Yates. “In a time when educational resources are scarce or often non-existent, his fraud helped steer a lucrative computer contract to the highest bidder – one that was willing to line his pockets in exchange for work.”

I mean, that is obviously bad. But one doesn't really graduate from a kickback scheme to child predator.

Has there ever been a case where someone walks up to a kid while the kid is with their parent in a Walmart or similar store and just tries to kidnap the kid?

It is rare, but it does happen

The lady made similar accusations about a year ago against Lyft.

I was about 80-20 Patel. What made me 100-0 was this fact. And now even further I'm leaning towards malice vs just a misunderstanding on her part.
Her and his behavior after the interaction) also caught on camera) is NOT consistent with her story. There's also a witness right there when it happened.
And to cap it all, right after the interaction the kid actually does fall and she runs the kid over) also caught on camera). So his "kid was falling" is very reasonable.

Nothing about this looks like anything more than an awkward interaction.

He’s pretty close to her and kind of has her sandwiched between the end cap. Indian folks, especially older ones, tend to be “close talkers”.

She (understandably) wants a little space, turns right too sharply, makes contact with the end cap and Patel tries to stabilize the kid, but she’s still moving forward so the kid ends up in his arms. He even steps in line with her to settle the kid back into her lap.

I mean, yeah, as a man, don’t get that close to a woman you don’t know and absolutely do not put your hands on her kid unless there is clear danger…but kidnapping? Come on.

They also had an interaction after he found the Tylenol and she wasn’t screaming he tried to kidnap my kid then. I between the two interactions she was talking and laughing with other customers in the store. Also the lady clearly had mental problems if you’ve seen any video of her speaking.

Let me put it like this. Most of us here are married with kids. What would your wife do if someone grabbed your kid in Walmart with truly malicious intent?

Like I said. I have had interactions with this guy. This is probably an innocent situation, but this guy is a scumbag.

No one should be wrongly accused of a crime, immigrant or not.

Assuming he’s actually innocent, of course.

I know this is a serious news item, but I couldn’t help but laugh at this description.

My only initial thought is that I'm surprised they got a true bill with that video. I'm sure there's more to come though.

It does look awkward how he grabs the kid. I can see being alarmed by that as a parent. But like, the guy just casually handed back the child, he didn't even pretend to try and put up a fight at all. He was also clearly not in a hurry at all. He proceeded to ask a store employee for assistance, he took time to talk to the mom again, and then checked out after buying the Tylenol

These just do not align with the actions of a would-be kidnapper, imo. If he was seriously trying to kidnap a child, wouldn't he be in a hurry out of the store. Wouldn't he put up even the slightest bit of a fight. Wouldn't he have some sort of get-away vehicle waiting on him outside.
