Luxury watches have recently piqued my interest. Typically before making a purchase, I research the best and what makes is so. I then look into similar products for comparison. Since I was a kid, I’ve always seen Rolex as a symbol of success but I’m not blown away by the Submariner.

I think I’m sold on the new Omega Seamaster 300M.

For the collectors of the OT:

How old were you when you purchased your first >$1000.00 watch?

What brand/model is your daily wear watch?

Do you purchase online or in-store?

Who are the reputable local stores?

If it’s good enough for James Bond it’s good enough for me.

Also it seems like everyone with “new money” goes and buys a Rolex. If you’re going Rolex go vintage. That Omega is awesome. One day....

Here's a question back to the OP...

Do you think that watch looks better than the average $300 dress watch?

Iirc, it was around 8 or 9. Followed the old, two months allowance maxim.

I probably wear my Hermes Cape Cod double tour most often.

That depends on brand.

I like Movado. That’s a personal choice. I don’t like Rolex mainly because it is the most faked. Keep in mind that high end watches require upkeep from reliable technicians. None I trust in Baton Rouge. I only bring my high end to Steve Andrews in Zachary. I also like Hamilton’s. I have bought online, mainly from Jomashop. I have bought some in the Caribbean. Daily wear is usually something inexpensive. Fossil usually.

If you are blown away by the Omega SM, then by all means, get that one, but I would suggest you do some research and reading on the Submariner. If you hold the two in your hands, I think there is a good chance you'll have a different opinion. And this may be something you never care about, but as far as holding exchangeable value, the Submariner is in a totally different league than the Omega.

Of course buying a new Submariner would likely require either connection to a authorized dealer or someone who has an in with an AD or perhaps some luck. Can be had from grey market dealers or private sellers, but there will be a premium involved. Finding a good older Sub (especially the 16610 model) is always a good idea, but you need to know what you are doing.

Lastly, if you buy the Omega new retail, you are going to take a very big "depreciation" hit as soon as you leave the store.

I have the planet ocean omega with the orange bezel, stainless steel bracelet. I got it in my late fifties. I had a submariner before. I love the watch and I like it not being a Rolex. I can’t really explain why. Maybe because watch enthusiasts like it but it doesn’t have great appeal to the general public. It seems understated for a big sports watch. I am a lawyer and wear a lot of navy blue suits. The stainless looks good. I only have orange neck ties. It kinda works. My black friends appreciate my style, my fellow white peeps don’t really get it. I really enjoy this watch!!!

Never. My cheap Timex does everything I want it to do.

4 or 5 years ago at around 33 my wife bought me a $1,300 Movado from Jared’s and that kinda started my watch collection. Once I started doing some research I found that Movado doesn’t have a good reputation in the watch community(middle of the mall type shite). After picking up another Movado and a Tag my wife bought me a Hamilton Khaki X-Wind which quickly became my favorite watch. This year at 37 is when My wife bought me my first Omega and I love it.

We happened to be on vacation in Arizona and bought my Omega at the store in Scottsdale fashion.

I have purchased from Joma Shop in the past but I wanted the warranty with the Omega because it was such a nice watch. Not sure if it’s true but I’ve heard if you buy from Joma that the warranty goes through them not Omega.

Give an example of a $300 dress watch.

I have been wearing this Seiko daily for last 3 years. The Omega is significantly more expensive but so too is the quality and craftsmanship in my opinion.

The argument of “Why by a Ferrari when you can drive a mustang” isn’t really what I was looking for here.

The title is Watch Enthusiasts.

Is it really so hard to understand?

Don't go too far back with "vintage" - I inherited a 1946 Rolex from my great-uncle but no one will work on it because there are no parts (and because it is very difficult to get someone to work on it, it isn't worth all that much).

I have that 009 on my wrist right now, except on a navy blue original (single piece of nylon, no hardware other than the buckle) NATO

That Omega is beautiful.

I didn’t buy a luxury watch until my 40th Birthday. Never really had the disposable cash until I got that age. I overthought it, over analyzed, and thought I wanted a black and blue Rolex GMT. I walked in to buy it and while waiting looked at the Paneria’s. They had a the Pam 1950 3 days GMT on an alligator strap and loved it. It’s currently on my wrist with a rubber strap and I wear it everyday whether I’m in a suit or a pair of swim trunks.

Never have, the most I go is $2-300.

I go between Seiko and Citizen, 3 of each.

In store only. I like to wear it first.

I have bought at stores like Macy's before, and I have a local jeweler who has takes care of me for my other purchases.

My everyday watch is a Pelagos LHD. I like it for the left side crown, but its a very "tool" watch. At same price point, I would look at a Tudor Black Bay. Pics don't do it justice. There are several color combos and strap choices. It's just a fine arse watch in person.

This is something I’m not familiar with. I’ve seen dozens of Rolex billboards around town and I guess I assumed if you walked into one of the fine jewelers with a fat wallet you could walk out an owner.

Are Submariners that limited in production? Or that high of a demand?

What about Omega? If I were looking to purchase something around Christmas, would I need to be on some waitlist?

Not even in the slightest on either. You can walk out of Anton's with a sub today.
