John McEnroe says Serena Williams would be “like 700” in the world tennis rankings if she played on the men’s tour.

McEnroe, speaking to NPR about his memoir “You Cannot Be Serious,” says Williams is the best female player ever, “no question.” But when asked about her being the best ever, without gender qualifiers, McEnroe was clear that he didn’t think so.

McEnroe says “if she played the men’s circuit she’d be like 700 in the world.”

The former tennis bad boy added that he thought Williams could beat some male players, “but if she had to just play the circuit -- the men’s circuit -- that would be an entirely different story.”

Women aren't as good at sports as men? Is this really an argument?

McEnroe is a strong, independent male.

This isn't an argument. it's a fact.

quote:

1998: Karsten Braasch vs. the Williams sisters[edit]
Another event dubbed a "Battle of the Sexes" took place during the 1998 Australian Open[34] between Karsten Braasch and the Williams sisters. Venus and Serena Williams, aged 17 and 16 respectively, had claimed that they could beat any male player ranked outside the world's top 200, so Braasch, then ranked 203rd, challenged them both. Braasch was described by one journalist as "a man whose training regime centered around a pack of cigarettes and more than a couple bottles of ice cold lager".[35][36] The matches took place on court number 12 in Melbourne Park,[37] after Braasch had finished a round of golf and two beers. He first took on Serena and after leading 5–0, beat her 6–1. Venus then walked on court and again Braasch was victorious, this time winning 6–2.[38] Braasch said afterwards, "500 and above, no chance". He added that he had played like someone ranked 600th in order to keep the game "fun".[39] Braasch said the big difference was that men can chase down shots much easier, and that men put spin on the ball that the women can't handle. The Williams sisters adjusted their claim to beating men outside the top 350.

I've always heard through the years that for sure the top 300 would stomp her. I believe pride87 on here who was a stud player in his own right thinks it's more like top 1000-2000. Apparently, some Aussie radio guy has now said Serena would beat Nick Kyrgios based on mental toughness.

I will say that if you look at a guy like David Goffin and didn't know anything about the sport, you would think for sure that Serena would beat him. Serena would be lucky to win a game.

At the height of her career Martina Navratilova would play practice sets against her coach who was a former pro who was at best considered a marginal, journeyman player. Navratilova had trouble winning points against him and rarely won games, much less sets or matches.

If this was a serious question the person needs to be fired.

That ESPN commercial with all the female athletes trying really hard to sound bad arse is so annoying. "Genders don't play sports, athletes do." **drops mic and walks away**

She might not win much on the tennis court vs men but my guess is she'd destroy McEnroe's anus with her BBC

To be totally fair though, they were 16 and 17 years old at that time.

Serena is much better than she was at 16 years old.

I completely agree with McEnroe, but that example isn't totally fair.

I played at the national level in HS and first two years of college and had the chance to play a couple of exhibition matches (not totally serious play for crowds where the pros work to keep the ball in play vice winning points) with ranked pro players.

I thought I was hot shite until the first time I went up against some dude ranked near the very bottom of the world rankings against whom I would have not won a point if he had been serious. The pros, men and women, are so much better than club and amateur players that it is hard to grasp. The women pros are very, very good. I played with several. But the men are a huge leap above in skill, stamina and overall strength. Much like watching a PGA tournament and the "short" hitters are driving it out 300 yards.

Many moons ago I saw Sody Cracker's Dad, a very good amateur player, play against the Number One female Canadian player. She was gracious in defeat but mostly I remember her being pretty cute, despite the fact that I was only ten.

That might be charitable. That said, she'd still beat the hell out of any male who isn't seriously training to be a pro himself.

I don't watch much tennis but I'd watch a Djokovic vs Serena match if it happened today.
