Is your friend going to lie about the accident to the insurance company? The claims processor is going to wonder why you have a few thousand in damages with no police report.

It's worked here in Texas at least. Some shitfaced kid ran into my old truck and fricked the back bumper up royally.

I got the truck checked out and all I needed was a new bumper. No other damage. Just told them to buy me a ranch hand replacement (to match my brush guard) and if they did that then I wouldn't make a report and his parents did it and his insurance paid for it.

As long as the car gets fixed free and the parents beat the shite out of the kid/ guarantee him a horrible summer, I don't see anything wrong with that

Depends on the situation. If all he did was back into my car in the parking lot when I'm not in the car and he just had a few drinks and was worried about being close to the legal limit I would probably do what your friend did. If I'm in the car driving and he's completely wasted and crosses 5 lanes of traffic and hits me, I would definitely call the cops.

I don't understand the need to call the police for traffic accidents. It's a civil matter.

You don't see the value of a police report as evidence of what happened?

I would have asked for pics of the mom and, if satisfactory, worked out a "payment" plan.

Does a DWI really "ruin" someone's life? Even if so, I would still call the cops. He could have killed someone

traffic violations help insurance companies determine fault. If an uninsured motorist hits me I damn sure am calling the cops. It's an official record of what happened. Exchanging info is great, but it only goes as far as that person can be trusted.

Well if the accident happened in a parking lot the police wouldn't be involved anyways(in a normal fender bender where one person isn't drinking).

I'm calling the cops. Doesn't matter if the guy was drunk or not.

Nope. I'd have called the cops. Not because the kid was drunk, but because I'd want an official record of everything for insurance. I don't trust people enough to take care of things when they say they are going to do something.

The biggest issue is making sure their insurance is legit and they won't fight it after the fact. Without a police report, that can be hard to do.
