Bloomberg

More than 99% of Italy’s coronavirus fatalities were people who suffered from previous medical conditions, according to a study by the country’s national health authority.

After deaths from the virus reached more than 2,500, with a 150% increase in the past week, health authorities have been combing through data to provide clues to help combat the spread of the disease.

Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte’s government is evaluating whether to extend a nationwide lockdown beyond the beginning of April, daily La Stampa reported Wednesday. Italy has more than 31,500 confirmed cases of the illness.

US adults are what, 40% obese in this country? That's an underlying health condition. I'm gonna guess once you add in diabetes, asthma, etc that more than 50% of Americans have underlying health issues.

I don't get why anyone is downplaying this thing. Why risk not doing the things we're doing? We have way too many conspiracy theorists on TD

And so does a massive amount of people in Louisiana and the country as a whole. Why do people keep saying this as if it makes it less deadly. This is stupid thinking

I don’t get why anyone is continuing to blow this out of proportion as more and more data comes out that shows this thing is just slightly more severe than the flu.

Because of the very real and very evident toll these measures are taking on the economy, which will also have devastating effects on human health. If it becomes more evident that it overwhelmingly affects a small portion of the population, the people outside that portion should be allowed to get back to living their lives ASAP.

The patents we are admitting so far have responded well to being in the prone position while intubated and placed on nimbix. Only thing frustrating is it’s hard to get them off the vent thus maxing out the ICU

It will get better sooner than by not doing anything at all. If this thing pops, I mean really pops, we're talking about potentially devastating consequences to out economy. A situation that would be far worse and could take far longer to come back from. Our health care system will not be able to handle that many hospitalizations. If we do nothing, we are likely well on the way to becoming Italy. This thing can take up to 2 weeks before you feel anything. We could all be carrying this and spreading it to others right now.

Yes, this sucks, yes the economy is taking a hit because of it, but we're doing this for a reason. We're trying to prevent a bigger, potentially devastating collapse.

The article doesn't mention anything about obesity.

quote:

The Rome-based institute has examined medical records of about 18% of the country’s coronavirus fatalities, finding that just three victims, or 0.8% of the total, had no previous pathology. Almost half of the victims suffered from at least three prior illnesses and about a fourth had either one or two previous conditions.

More than 75% had high blood pressure, about 35% had diabetes and a third suffered from heart disease.

High blood pressure is a problem in the US though. Not sure of the differences between Italy and the US in that regard. We also need the data to get an accurate definition of high blood pressure.

Ok, let's say we go back to normal now. The hospitals are full with these sick people. Now let's say you get in a car accident taking your kids to school. He is seriously injured. Well, the hospital is full so your kid dies. You ok with that?

You guys realize the stock market starting going down way before the government started doing stuff right? Before we even had a confirmed case, we had a day where the dow dropped 2200 points. In fact, after every press conference Trump has where they lay out the measures they plan to implement the market bounces back slightly.

The faster we contain the virus, the faster we get back to normal. A quarantine is the fastest way to get through this thing. Despite whatever you may believe

Nor did I reference the article. I didn't need to, to make that comment, it's common sense.

The economy will get better sooner by getting back to work sooner. Taking evidence like this into account informs those who are making the decisions. There is no reason to downplay the seriousness, I agree. There is also no reason to downplay positive or encouraging evidence. We are coming to a point, sooner rather than later, where we will have to decide what the acceptable number of losses are against the economic and societal impact these measures are having.
