He's gotta make some sacrifices
There are some nice very affordable apartments in that area

If he truly wants a decent size house (and not an apartment) to rent, he will be house poor in Virginia Highland. The demand and lack of supply in that area has driven rent prices way up there.
Pretty much the entire east side of Atlanta is in the same boat as far as single-family homes go. Even apartments have gotten ridiculous.

I lived in Memphis for awhile and it grew on me. I have also spent a lot of time in Atlanta and I don't like it at all. The traffic alone is a reason not to live in Atlanta.
Memphis is a fun city that is growing and becoming even better. The entire midtown Madison scene has exploded since I moved and gives a legitimate secondary to going downtown. Cooper Young might be the perfect area for you. It has houses that are affordable and a good scene within walking distance.
Memphis is amazingly cheap. One of the cheapest cities in the US. $95k there goes a very long way.
Another area to consider is Mud Island. I lived on it for two years and waking up to waterfront Mississippi River is unique. They have nice houses or apartments as options and all are affordable.

Would be somewhere in the vicinity of the 75/285 overlap.
You can find nice affordable housing over there, especially right outside the perimeter in Smyrna or Sandy Springs. A lot of good restaurants and bars popping up. Good mix of younger single people and married with young children in that area. A lot of the big corps have offices out there, so the average income in the area is pretty high (which is good). Plus the Braves new stadium will be around 75/285 so that will bring in a lot of stuff (for better or worse). Traffic is terrible over there so you will want to live close. A ton of housing options there though.

I haven't looked at rental prices in a while but I would guess you're probably looking at 1750-2500 a month for that. I would consider a condo or townhome if I were you to get a nicer place in a more desirable area.

95k plus what benefits? What's the insurance situation? My wife's old job took out more than $600/mo for health insurance, her new one takes out none but has a high deductible.
You might not be able to live like a king, but you're not going to be struggling unless you rent some place ridiculous or have untold student loans. No shame in living in an apartment for a year while you figure out the lay of the land.

The FIRST answer I need is where your office in Atlanta will be. Traffic is so unbelievably bad, it really does matter.
I worked for an ATL based company and really dreaded the weeks at corporate due to the traffic.
I have limited experience there, but if you can't do Buckhead, I like the Duluth/John's Creek area in the north.

Could we rent a nice house (not interested in an apartment unit/condo, either) in a good neighborhood on this salary and still have some money left over for savings?
the rental market for houses here is very pro-landlord right now. i drove a friend around town all day a few weeks ago looking at places, after he'd done extensive research; and the choices were very limited.
He did end up finding a decent place on the west side (GaTech) for a very reasonable price ($1500/mo). We looked at numerous 3/2s and a couple 4/2.5s in decent but transitional (and somewhat "hip") neighborhoods, in the $2300-2700/mo range. it's pretty insane. We were pretty shocked he found the place he ended up in.
If you have time to be patient and shop and research, then you can make it work.
Also, if you aren't eating at fancy places every night, then Atlanta is no more expensive than most cities. We have our regular spots and hit happy hours, specials etc. Groceries and other commodities aren't noticeably more here.

those are suburbs--way out suburbs at that.
and there are MANY better options than Buckhead. Many many.
And yes traffic sucks. I work from home, so I avoid it. Wife commutes against traffic. So she misses the brunt of it.

So do I. Houses in BH are insanely overpriced, primarily because you're paying for the zipcode. However, there are plenty of condos or rental houses that can easily be afforded on $95K.

Memphis, LR or Atlanta.
Those are some suck choices but 95K for two is going to be tough in Atlanta for sure.

One advantage Atlanta has over Memphis and Little Rock is the diversity of business and networking opportunities in a city like Atlanta. I think a younger professional looking for opportunities to jump to bigger and better things is well served living in a big city early on. The number of Fortune 500 companies (and the companies that support them) in Atlanta is very attractive. It's all about options. Options give you leverage.

Wow, this thread makes me feel good about my rent in this city.
OP, it can be done, but as suggested I would get as close as you can to the office. Traffic here will make you want to kick babies.

Your best bet is prob Little Rock as far as bang for your buck. Also depends on what you like. I like to fish and play golf along with other outdoor stuff so I actually really enjoyed living there.

AND where you can enjoy going out. I think the fricking Saturday afternoon traffic is worse than the weekday commute traffic.

95k will be fine. You will just have to choose between going out to eat / drinks and putting money into savings.

It's insane what houses cost in Brookhaven

i spend the summer and chunk of ski season in MT so I just escape atlanta for the best of it. That said, Atlanta is centrally located for pretty easy access (if you can plan around the baby-kick-inducing traffic) to great outdoors stuff. Golf is a bit pricey unless you go the uberburbs (and even then...). But you can be in some pretty nice wilderness, mountains, whitewater, trout streams etc. in under two hours. Even an hour puts you at great mountain biking like Blankets Creek. + Lake Lanier
I drive to the gulf coast in 4-5 hours. Charleston in 5. Savannah in 3+.
I do not love Atlanta, by any stretch. But having lived in and visited a lot of other big cities, I know how to make this place work and enjoy it (we;re still planning to move southern base to a Charleston-area beach/deepwater creek though...)

OP
Does your girlfriend have a specific preference on where she wants to be?
or is she just cool with whatever choice you make?
