It wasn't a car show. The event organizer probably just got the local car club to bring a few vehicles out to add to the festivities. That's my read on it, anyway.

Well, yeah. That's why he was arrested.

Was the car inside the stadium on like the concourse or was it out in the parking lot? Because the owner could get charged additionally if it was in the stadium for bringing a gun into the stadium.

Why would someone have a loaded gun on display? Why don't parents teach their kids that it's not OK to grab things that don't belong to you.

It was the car that was on display. Whoever parked it forgot it was in there. And if you've ever been to any kind of baseball or softball game, kids are running around all over the place.

Interesting scenario. If the kid had shot someone else, the mother would be responsible for any negligence attributable to the kid. Since the mom is the victim of her own kid, the guy’s civil defense will be that it’s her fault for not supervising her own child.

What are the odds of this happening?

The odds of getting shot at a college baseball game is pretty high.

The odds of an antique car with a loaded gun, on display at a college baseball game is pretty high.

The odds that someone's kid would find the gun is up there then there are the odds that the kid would pull the trigger.

That has to be like 1 in 500 million type thing.

Maybe 8 year olds shouldn’t steal things out of old cars.

Mom should have raised her kid better

These are not high odds, kids are dumb.

You may want to learn the difference between high odds vs. low odds. Took me 3 readings to understand your post.

I sort of feel bad for the old guy who got arrested.

Yes, he absolutely should have unloaded the gun or secured it better, but I do agree that the parents need to monitor and teach their kids better. I don't want to judge harshly either way here.

One of the comments

quote:

“I served with him …this was an accidental shooting, yes the weapon should have been unloaded and put in a more secure place BUT also the parents should have exercised a better watch, children especially younger ones are quick and very curious, McFarland didn’t mean for this to happen, imagine how he feels …” There were scores of similar comments of support for McFarland. Angela Dunlap Kendall wrote, “Mr. McFarland is the sweetest man. My boys are now 12 and 9. We visited Mr. McFarland’s military museum in Atoka and he was great with my boys (then 10 and 7). Mr. McFarland also own a gun shop which we toured because my boys begged and were interested. I teach my boys not to touch other people’s belongings. I agree that Mr. McFarland should have used more thought to his actions but why aren’t we ever holding parents responsible for the supervision and training of the child? I hate this for Mr. McFarland to be made out to be such a bad guy. He is so kind and thoughtful. Tragic situation my prayers for all involved…”

Any ways, it was a jeep.. so I do understand a boy being able to go through that easier than say a locked vehicle.

quote:

Police said the boy was inside a vintage World War II jeep that was on display as part of a Veterans Appreciation Day at the stadium.

The guy owns a Military Museum

I think the mom has been punished enough for her lack of supervision.
