True. You have a bird that wins 4-5 times, you start breeding him, like horses.

When the raid was made I wonder if anyone shouted "Back up Jose, Back up Jose".

they are usually putting strychnine in them before a fight to help them stay amped up. if you see one that looks like it's squirting more blood than it should then it's a dead giveaway.

That sounds like a miracle.

Serious question, how often does one last that long? From what I remember from back in the day most of the time both cocks would end up dead. IDK if I ever remember seeing a cock look like it'd survive for long after a fight.

Little known fact: one of the biggest cock fighting pits in the world was in Sunset, LA until it got banned in 2008.

have many times. I loved it. My cousins used to raise and train some excellent birds. Never been to gaff (knife) fights. Only natural hill (spurs). I'd go tomorrow if they legalized it.

Aight. I read the whole thread. There are bunch of dudes talking out their arse in here! lol. Handled birds in the early 90s. Pits all over north central La. Gaff fights were more common, but there were knife fights. No, it wasn’t like a murder scene……all the time. A rooster winning 5-6 fights was uncommon. I would still be raising game birds if it were legal.

Louisiana was the last state to outlaw cockfighting. Can’t remember when but it was after 2005 bc I remember going to a few with my buddy that used fight them.

I have fond memories of going to the chicken fights with my dad and grandpa. The playing there with the other kids was top notch fun.

The parish tax assessor where I grew up raised fighting roosters. My buddy and I used to go feed/water them for him sometimes.

I never went to an "official" fight, but my dad talked about a ring near us. We did see a few backyard contests fought with no gaffs. All natural. Once saw a fighting rooster kill a big barnyard rooster stone dead in about one second. The owner of the big barnyard rooster thought it was going to kick arse because of its size. He damn near cried at the outcome.

Drove up through rural Oklahoma years after it was banned, and the little A frame houses with tethered roosters were still all over in plain view. Of course, it's not illegal to just raise them.

Never heard of strychnine. My Dad used vitamin K to reduce bleeding.

Now that you mention this. I remember hearing that. Isn't that around Carencro?

To each their own but I always sensed something very weak in the character in people who enjoyed seeing animals suffer

I mean obviously there are those that disagree with me but it's trashy behavior look at the people who engaged it's not like they were classy in other regards

We used to go fairly regularly. We had Texoma Pits just outside of town. It had concession stands, camper hookups. I’ve seen upwards of 300-400 people in attendance. The Christmas Derby was always the big event each year.
I used to make good money some nights.
Someone yells,”can I get a 25/20 on the red banty?” That means he picks the red banty and if he wins he gets $20. If the red banty rooster dies I win $25”
